SAINT PETER, Minn. - Two singles players and a couple of doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 Friday with a pair of wins in the first two rounds of the ITA Midwest Regional.
Junior Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South), the top-seed in the bracket, picked up a pair of wins after a first round bye. In his first match, Sprinkel downed Wisconsin-Whitewater's Rithwik Rajshekar Raman 6-3, 6-3. Sprinkel advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over 17th-seeded Motasem Al-Houni of Gustavus. Sprinkel looks to earn a spot in the quarterfinals when he faces 16th-seeded Alex Boomgarden of Carthage Saturday morning.
Sophomore Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) also advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins after a first round bye. In his first match, Balbraith defeated Nick Lambrecht of St. Scholastica 6-0, 6-2. In his second match, Galbraith beat 17th-seeded Yusuf Chowdhry of Luther 6-1, 6-4. Galbraith will face eighth-seeded Byron Balkin of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Senior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) earned a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Alasdair McClintic of Macalester in the first round before defeating 11th-seeded Ryan Vande Linde of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the second round 6-4, 6-4. 17th-seeded Brian Klein of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Janssen 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 32. Senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) defeated St. Thomas' Brendan Hollidge 6-0, 6-2 in the first round before downing Wisconsin-La Crosse's Nick Skanavis 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Sixth-seeded Jake Humphreys downed Stokstad in the round of 32.
Freshman Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over St. Scholastica's Tiberia Cretu in the first round before downing Central's West Adelman 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. Third-seeded Mya Smith-Dennis of Gustavus downed Bernt 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32. Sophomore Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Braydan Parman 6-3, 6-4 in the first round before earning a 6-0, 6-3 win over St. John's Steven Wirtz in the second round. Second-seeded Ben Shklyar downed Hickman 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 in the third round. Freshman Chad Moklestad (Boone, Iowa/Boone) suffered a first round loss to St. Scholastica's Josh Stainer 7-6, 6-4, while sophomore Zach Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) lost a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 decision to Logan Peterson of Gustavus.
In doubles play, a pair of doubles teams advanced to the round of 16. Third-seeded Sprinkel and Galbraith earned a first round bye before defeating Ryan Jump and Chris Conley of Carthage 8-1. In the round of 16, they will face Matt Baker and Mitch Elofson of Gustavus. Coe's other doubles team of Janssen and Stokstad, seeded ninth, defeated Grinnell's Rob Storrick and Cole Miller 8-4 in the first round before downing Central's West Adelman and Tim Kahl 8-4. They will also face a team from Gustavus in the round of 16, as they face Adres Saenz and Marcel Gyswyt.
Hickman and Decker picked up an 8-4 first round win over St. Norbert's Tim Hartwick and Travis Buechel. In the second round, Wisconsin-Whitewater's sixth-seeded team of Jake Humphreys and Kevin Friend defeated Hickman and Decker 9-7. Bernt and Moklestad dropped a 9-8 first round decision to Brian Utz and Aladair McClintic of Macalester.
Two rounds of singles play were scheduled to start (weather permitting) at 9 a.m. Saturday, while they will play three rounds of doubles.
