DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team won it's 10th-straight match to start the year Saturday, as they locked up their third-straight Iowa Conference Championship. It was the sixth overall for the program.
Coe started the day with a 9-0 win over Dubuque, while wrapping up the fall dual meet season with a 9-0 victory over Loras. The victories gave Coe 23-straight regular season wins over an Iowa Conference opponent. This is the second three-peat for the Kohawks, as they also won three-straight titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The Kohawks opened doubles play with an 8-1 win at number one against Dubuque, as senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) downed Chelsea Borden and Ashley Schlueter. Lucero also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Borden at number one singles, while Ferree was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Schlueter at number three singles.
At number two doubles, sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Stephanie LoCasto and Marissa Rutenbeck 8-1. Birky also earned a 7-5, 7-5 win over Alexandra Dixon at number four singles.
Coe's final doubles win came at number three, as sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) and senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) downed Dixon and Wegner 8-0. Hoffmann was also a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Aio Karino at number five singles, while Watson downed Wegner 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles. Coe's final victory of the match came from sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills), as she downed LoCasto 6-3, 6-1 at number two singles.
Just like the match with Dubuque, Coe jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles against Loras. At number one, Lucero and Ferree downed Caroline Rainey and Esterjoy Mugai 8-1. Ferree also downed Rainey 6-0, 6-2 at number two singles.
At number two doubles, Birky and Lasecki defeated Jessica Dickhut and Maggie Clements 8-0. Birky also picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Carrie Crabill at number three singles. Coe's final doubles win came at number three, as Hoffmann and Watson downed Crabill and Rebecca Weglarz 8-1. Watson was also a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mugai at number four singles.
Coe also picked up singles wins at one, five and six. At number one, Sebastian downed Dickhut 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Virginia Meurer (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior) beat Weglarz 6-1, 6-0, while freshman Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) defeated Clements 6-3, 6-2 at number six singles.
The Kohawks will wrap up the fall season next Friday and Saturday, as they travel to Decorah for the Iowa Conference Individual Championships.
