STORM LAKE, Iowa - After jumping out to a two set lead over Buena Vista, the Kohawks dropped the third set before bouncing back to win the fourth in convincing fashion. With the 3-1 win over the Beavers, Coe upped its winning streak to 18 and improved to 3-0 in Iowa Conference play.
The Kohawks came out red-hot in the first set of the match, taking an early 11-5 lead. Buena Vista called a timeout to regroup, but Coe increased its lead to 16-9 out of the timeout. After another Beaver timeout, the Kohawks upped their lead to 19-10. Coe wound up winning set one by a score of 25-12 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Buena Vista jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but the Kohawks battled back to tie the set at 8-8. From there the set was a back and forth battle until a timeout was called with the score tied at 16. Out of the timeout, Coe finally took the lead and upped it to 22-17. That five-point gap proved to be the widest of the set, which the Kohawks ultimately won 25-22.
Set three proved to be a closely contested one. The Beavers built a 17-13 lead, but Coe cut the lead 22-21. However, after a Buena Vista timeout, the home team took the last three points of the set to earn a 25-21 victory. The Kohawks still led the match 2-1 heading into the fourth set.
After the set started out at 5-5, the Coe went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead in the fourth set. This forced the Beavers to call timeout, but that didn't slow the Kohawks. A 5-1 run upped the lead to 15-6 and forced another Buena Vista timeout. Coe closed the set on a 10-5 run, winning 25-11 and taking the match by a score of 3-1.
Junior Rachel Bosworth (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) led the Kohawks with a team-high 13 kills. Fellow junior Rachel Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) also reached double-digit kills with 10, and she recorded a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Mackenzie Harbaugh (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) led Coe with 24 assists, while junior Alissa Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) recorded 16 digs.
The Kohawks, winners of 19 consecutive matches, are now 20-2 overall, and 3-0 against Iowa Conference foes. They will return to action this weekend as they travel to Waverly, Iowa to participate in the Wartburg Tournament. Coe will face two opponents on Friday, October 4 and two more on Saturday, October 5.
