TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sophomore
Ashley Schnell (Lincoln, Neb./North Star) earned her first track and field All-American honors Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
In her first event of the day, Schnell came into the mile run with the ninth fastest time of the Championship. Schnell improved on her time of 5:01.82 in the preliminary round with a finals time of 4:55.95. Her time earned her third place, falling just :01.29 short of first place. Ayla Mitchell of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the mile run in a time of 4:54.66.
It was the first track and field All-American honors for Schnell, who has qualified for the NCAA Championships in Cross Country twice, Indoor Track and Field twice and Outdoor Track and Field once. Schnell earned All-American honors this past fall in Cross Country.
The reigning Iowa Conference MVP also finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.12. Her finals time was over three seconds faster than her first round time, which was the seventh fastest time of the championships. Ashley Graybill of St. Norbert won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.95.
With Schnell's two third-place finishes, the Kohawks finished 12th as a team of the 68 teams represented at the national championships.
