SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - After dropping its first game of the Marriott West Tournament to 10th-ranked Washington Univ. in St. Louis, the Coe softball team bounced back for three-straight wins to end the weekend.
Coe took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning against the Bears as freshman Abby Burger (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) drove in freshman Katherine King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) on a single up the middle. The Bears quickly answered back in the bottom of the third, as they scored three runs to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Senior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) recorded two of the Kohawks three hits in the game. Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) took the loss in six innings pitched. The senior gave up four earned runs and nine hits, while striking out two.

The Kohawks bounced back in the second game of the day against Westminster, as Coe made quick work of Westminster, winning 13-2 in five innings.

Pitcher Ashley Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) silenced the bats of Augustana in the first game Sunday morning. The freshman struck out nine, while only allowing two runners to reach base. The Vikings had a runner on in the fourth by the only hit on a two-out single and another reached by error in the seventh inning.

The Kohawks scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leonard led the inning off with a single. Two batters later, junior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) singled to center field to move Leonard to third. Leonard then scored on a fielders choice by Burger. Zaugg finished the game 3-for-3.

In the final game of the tournament, the Kohawks used a six-run sixth inning to pull away for the win. Schwenker led the inning off with a double to left center field. Junior Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) then trippled to right field, plating Schwenker. Later that inning, Leonard homered to right field, scoring three runs for Coe. The Kohawks also used RBI singles by Burger and Schwenker for the other two runs.

Leonard finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs. Schwenker was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Wedemeier also added two hits.

Simon threw four innings of releif to pick up her eighth win of the season. She struck out three while giving up just two hits.
