IOWA CITY, Iowa - Facing one of its toughest opponents of the year, the Coe baseball team fell to NCAA Division I Iowa Wednesday at Duane Banks Field.  It was the second time the Kohawks have faced the Hawkeyes in as many years. The first two hitters for the Kohawks reached base, as freshman Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) singled down the right field line and freshman Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) reached on a walk.  Both were quickly retired, as DeAngelis was thrown out stealing and Nisenson was picked off at first.

Coe's defense held Iowa through the first two batters, earning outs, but it was the three runs on three hits after that put the Hawkeyes in the lead for good.

Sophomore Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) cut into the Hawkeyes lead with a home run to left field, his second of the season.  The second inning run would be all the Kohawks could plate until the ninth inning.  Velvick's home run would also be the last hit for Coe until the sixth inning, when senior Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) had a lead-off single to right field.

The Kohawks' second run came in the ninth inning, when DeAngelis led the inning off with a walk.  After a failed pick-off attempt at first, DeAngelis advanced to third.  DeAngelis then scored as sophomore Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) reached on an error by the shortstop.

Sophomore Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) took his second loss of the season on the mound, giving up five hits and five runs in one and a third innings pitched.  He struck out one.  Relief pitchers Alec Lewis (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain), Kevin Baranowski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and Teren Bladel (Davenport, Iowa/North) struck out two batters apiece.

The Kohawks return to action on Friday when they travel to the University of Dubuque for a three-game weekend series.
