WAVERLY, Iowa - After giving up four late inning runs in the first game, Coe came storming back for a 3-0 win in the nightcap to beat 20th-ranked Wartburg Sunday.  It was just the second loss for the Knights on the year.
The Kohawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game.  Senior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) walked to lead off the game.  Leonard moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by freshman Katherine King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk).  Junior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) doubled down the left field line to move Leonard to third.

With one out and two runners in scoring position, freshman Abby Burger (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) grounded out to second base to plate Leonard and move Zaugg to third.  Coe scored one more run in the inning, as senior Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) singled to left center to score Zaugg.

After a scoreless first inning, the Knights led off the second with a home run by Tina Vande Hoef.  Neither team could plate anymore runners until the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore CC Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) earned a one-out walk to get things going for the Kohawks in the top of the sixth inning.  Junior Mackenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) pinch ran for Williams and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Erica Smothers (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy).

Lang moved to third on a wild pitch as Leonard earned another walk.  Leonard then stole second, putting two runners in scoring position for King.  Another wild pitch allowed Lang to score and Leonard to move to third.  King then doubled to right field to plate Leonard, but was thrown out at third trying to extend her hit into a triple.

The Kohawks weren't the only team scoring runs in the sixth inning, as Wartburg rallied for four runs on four hits in the inning.  One run came with one out, while the remaining three all came with two outs.  The Knights stranded two runners to close the inning.

Coe tried to answer in the top of the seventh inning, but ended the game with the bases loaded and no runs in the final inning.

Freshman Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) took the loss on the mound, which was just her second of the season.  She struck out nine, while giving up five earned runs in the loss.

Zaugg tallied three of the Kohawks seven hits on the day, including two doubles, while senior Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) added a pair of singles.

Schwenker threw one of the best games of her Coe career in the nightcap, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits.  While walking four, she didn't allow a run in the seven innings on the mound.

Neither team could get a hit until the top of the fourth inning when the Kohawks put the first run on the scoreboard.  Freshman Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) hit a one-out double to left center.  Zaugg then tallied her third double of the day to left field, plating Hanson.  The Knights tallied their first hit in the bottom half of the inning, but weren't able to capitalize on it.

Coe added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning as Leonard doubled to center field to score both Schwenker and Lang.  The Kohawks shut down the Knights the rest of the way, allowing just one hit in the final three innings.  The Kohawks tallied six hits in the game, with no player recording more than one hit.

The Kohawks return to action on Monday as they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.  Coe enters the game at 16-6 while the Pioneers are 3-9 on the season.
