ORLANDO, Fla. - After taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, the Coe College women's tennis team held on for a 5-4 win over Evangel on Monday at the Lake Cane Tennis Park. Coe improved to 13-1 on the year with the win.
Coe's two doubles wins came at two and three, as Coe's top team of Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) dropped an 8-1 decision to Amy Grossklag-Fritz and Jenna Elliott, the fourth ranked doubles team in all of NAIA women's tennis. At number two doubles, Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) downed Breanna Feemster 8-4. Birky also defeated Morgan Reilly 6-0, 7-5 at number four singles.
At number three doubles, Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) defeated Phine Mulumba and Emily Cook 8-0. Coe also took wins at five and six singles. At number five singles, Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) downed Mulumba 6-2, 6-2, while Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) defeated Cook 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 at number six singles.
The Kohawks will return to action on Tuesday, as they play a pair of matches. Coe will face Trine at 11 a.m. and Nova Southeastern at 4:30 p.m., both times eastern. The matches are being played at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
