Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) connected on her 200th career hit Wednesday as Coe beat Dubuque 4-0 in game one. The Spartans took the nightcap 2-0.
Coe scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Senior
Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) doubled to center field to lead off the inning. Junior
Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) then hit a one-out double to center field to score freshman
Jackie Finley (Lone Tree, Iowa/Lone Tree), who was pinch running for Hanse.
The Kohawks added another run in the third inning. Junior
Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) reached on a fielders choice before moving to second on a wild pitch. Freshman
Abby Burger (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) singled to right field, advancing, advancing Zaugg to third. Hanse then singled to right field to plate Zaugg.
Coe broke the game open in the fourth inning with two more runs, extending its lead to 4-0. Leonard became just the second player in school history with 200 hits in her next at-bat, with a single to right field. Freshman
Katherine King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) then singled to center field, advancing Leonard to third. King then stole second, before moving to third on a wild pitch, as Leonard scored on the stray pitch. Junior
MacKenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) singled to center field to plate King.
The Kohawks went hitless in the final three innings. They also held the Spartans hitless in the final four innings of the game.
King and Hanse finished the game with two hits apiece.
Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) earned her 13th win in the circle in seven innings pitched. The freshman held the Spartans to just one hit, while striking out 13 and walking none. With her 13th win, the Kohawks have now had a pitcher record 13 or more wins for five-straight seasons.
During the nightcap, the Kohawks gave up two runs in the sixth inning and weren't able to tally any of their own. Coe was also held to just five hits in the loss. Just once during the game, with two outs in the top of the seventh, were the Kohawks able to move a runner past second base.
Wedemeier tallied two of the Kohawks five hits in the game. Senior
Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) dropped to 6-4 in the circle with the loss. Schwenker gave up just four hits and struck out nine in the game.
Coe returns to action on Saturday as they host fourth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Clark Field.
