MINNEOLA, Fla. – After a pair of shutouts on day one of their spring trip, the Kohawks' played a pair of closely contested games on day two. Coe won 6-4 over Methodist and followed that up with a 6-3 win over Misericordia.
The Kohawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Methodist. Nicole Gentile (Martinez, California/Alhambra) singled to center and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brianna Gardner (Princeville, Illinois/Princeville). Gentile
Then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Monarchs' catcher. A balk from Abby Flannagan (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) and a single from Danielle Schlotterbeck (Central City, Iowa/Central City) quickly gave Coe two more base runners, both of whom were driven in by an Emily Grell (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) single.
The Kohawks tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Mallory McArtor (Riverside, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gentile brought her home with her second hit of the game.
Methodist tied things up in the top of the third with a four-run outburst, but the tie only lasted until the bottom of the inning when the Kohawks added yet another run. Schlotterbeck got things started for Coe in its half of the inning with a double. A sacrifice bunt by Grell advanced pinch runner Jacqueline Naeve (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) to third, and she was promptly driven in by a Gretchen Lilienthal (Durant, Iowa/Durant) single.
After both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings, Coe added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Taylor Riedl (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Hempstead) home run to right center. Maddison Woodruff (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) shut down the Monarchs in the final frame to seal the victory.
In their second game of the morning, the Kohawks fell behind 3-0 in the first. In the third inning, McArtor drove in McCall Meade (Holbrook, Iowa/Williamsburg) to cut the lead to 3-1. Coe scored another run in the inning on an error by Misericordia.
The Kohawks' fourth inning was led off by a Schlotterbeck home run, tying the game at 3-3. Coe took the lead for the first time in the fifth after McArtor scored on a wild pitch. An additional run was tacked on by the Kohawks when Flannagan drove in Gentile. Flannagan added an RBI double in the seventh to give Coe its final margin of victory.
Coe softball will return to action tomorrow against Muhlenberg at 4 p.m. CST. Following that game the Kohawks will take on Immaculata.
