CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After dropping the first game of the weekend series with Loras, Coe bounced back on Saturday for a doubleheader sweep of the Duhawks. Coe won the first game 8-7 in 10 innings, while taking the nightcap 13-3.After trailing 5-1 in the third inning, Coe added two runs in the third to make the game 5-3. The offense exploded in the fifth inning for four runs on four hits, while still leaving one runner on.
Junior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) walked and sophomore
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) singled through the left side to start the inning. After a fielders choice, senior
Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity) singled up the middle to plate Velvick. On the very next pitch, freshman
John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) hit his first career home run to right center field, giving the Kohawks their first lead of the game.
After a two-run, two-out home run by Loras in the top of the seventh, neither team could score again in extra innings until the bottom of the 10th, when the Kohawks added one run to win the game.
Freshman
Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) reached on an error by the second baseman to start the inning. Fellow freshman
Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) pinch ran for Nisenson and stole second base. Velvick then walked, which led to an RBI single throug the right side on a 1-2 count for junior
Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison).
Coe's three through six hitters were a combined 9-for-19 in the game with five runs and three RBI. Richmond, Velvick and Schisler each had two hits, while McAllister finished with three. Schisler drove in two runs and McAllister plated one. Logan drove in three on his home run.
Senior
Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) earned a no decision in seven innings. The southpaw gave up five earned runs and struck out three. Freshman
Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) earned his first collegiate win in three innings on the mound. He struck out two, while giving up just one hit.
After trailing once again to start the nightcap 1-0, Coe scored 13 of the final 15 runs in the game. The Kohawks added five runs in the fourth and six runs in the sixth. Coe tallied 13 hits in the game, led by Richmond with four, while Velvick and Tunning added two apiece. Nisenson, Velvick and Schisler each had two RBI, while Richmond added six.
Nisenson, Richmond and Schisler all hit doubles in the game, while Richmond and Velvick added two-run home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior
Cody Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) earned his second win in six innings on the hill. He struck out three, while giving up just five hits and two earned runs. Senior
Teren Bladel (Davenport, Iowa/North) struck out one in an inning on the mound.
Sunday's non-conference game with Grinnell has been cancelled. The Kohawks, 11-10 on the year, will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to face NCAA Division I Western Illinois.
