CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team won its 26th-straight match at the Clark Racquet Center on Friday, as the Kohawks defeated Wheaton 7-2 in a battle of regionally-ranked teams.
Coe held a 2-1 lead on the Thunder after doubles play, with Wheaton taking number one doubles in a match featuring two doubles teams in the top 25 in the country. At number two doubles, Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) and Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) downed Justin Ancona and David Buursma 8-5. Janssen also earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Andrew Trump at number six singles.
At number three doubles, Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) defeated Trump and Derek Mumaw 8-3. Stokstad was also a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Buursma at number four singles.
The Kohawks took the top two singles matches as Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) won at number one and two singles. Sprinkel, ranked 21st in the nation, defeated Ryan Kreis 6-0, 7-5 at number one singles. At number two, Galbraith downed Ancona 6-1, 7-6. Coe's final win came at number five, as Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) downed Mumaw 6-0, 6-2.
Coe (16-4 overall, 2-0 IIAC) returns to action on Saturday for two Iowa Conference matches. The Kohawks will face Dubuque (1-5 overall, 0-1 IIAC) at 9 a.m. and Simpson (5-6 overall, 0-0 IIAC) at 12 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
