CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe softball team won its third-straight game Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Iowa Conference foe Buena Vista.  The Kohawks improved to 22-8 overall with the wins. After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning for Buena Vista, the Kohawks wasted no time scoring the game's first run.  Senior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) singled up the middle on a 3-1 pitch to start the inning.  Leonard moved to second on a ground ball to shortstop by freshman Katherine King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk).  After a walk by junior Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central), senior Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) singled to right field, plating Leonard.

Coe struck again in the third inning, with Leonard setting the stage for her second run of the game.  After a lead-off single, Leonard stole second.  Wedemeier then tripled to right field to score Leonard.

In the fifth inning, Wedemeier drove in Leonard for the second time in the game with a single to right field.  Leonard had reached on a fielders choice to shortstop.  The Beavers answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one, but Coe once again tallied a run in the sixth inning to increase its lead.  In the first pitch of the sixth inning, junior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) blasted her second home run of the season to left field.

Leonard and Wedemeir finished with two hits apiece.  Wedemeier drove in two runs, with Leonard scoring three.  Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) earned her 14th win of the season in five innings.  The freshman struck out 13, while walking five and giving up just one hit.  Senior Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) earned the Kohawks' first save of the season in 1.2 innings in the circle.  The southpaw gave up just one hit while striking out two.

In the nightcap, Buena Vista tallied the first two runs of the game, but it was the final three by Coe that led to the win.  Leonard and King combined to start the third inning with back-to-back doubles, with King's plating Leonard for Coe's first run.  A fifth-inning home run by Wedemeier, her second of the year, tied the game.

Coe once again plated one run in the sixth inning for the win.  Zaugg and Schwenker led the inning off with back-to-back walks on four pitches each.  Zaugg moved to second on a wild pitch during Schwenker's at-bat.  Sophomore CC Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) singled in sophomore Emily Burress (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt), who was pinch running for Zaugg.

King, Wedemeier and freshman Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) led the Kohawks with two hits apiece.  Schwenker earned the win on seven strong innings.  She struck out six, while walking just one.

Coe will return to action on Saturday when they face Iowa Conference foe Simpson.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Clark Field.
