GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) became Coe's all-time wins leader on Saturday, as Coe College defeated Grinnell 5-4. The Kohawks led 2-1 after doubles play and won the final match for the victory.
After dropping number one singles, Coe won two and three doubles. At number two doubles, Lucero and Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) downed Sadhana Athreya and Emma Macdonald 9-8. Lucero was also a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Shirlene Luk at number one singles, as she passed former doubles partner Michelle Schupbach '13 for the top spot on Coe's all-time wins list. Watson also picked up a big win at number five singles, as she defeated Virginia Purcell 6-3, 7-6 for the final victory of the match.
At number three doubles, Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) defeated Hanna Feldman and Shanaz Daneshdoost 8-4. Coe's other victory came at number four singles, as Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) defeated Feldman 7-5, 7-6.
The Kohawks improved to 17-5, as they wrapped up the regular season on Saturday. Coe will return to action on Saturday, as they host the Iowa Conference Automatic Qualifier Tournament. After a first round bye, Coe will host a semifinal match on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
