CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the third-straight year, the Coe College women's tennis team has won the Iowa Conference Automatic Qualifier Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The top-seeded Kohawks opened the day with a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Central in the semifinals. At number one doubles, Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) defeated Angie Allgood and Megan Davis 8-5.
Coe also got a win at number two doubles, as Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) downed Sarah Montgomery and Katie Todd 8-1. Watson also earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Todd at number four singles that clinched the match.
The final doubles win against Central came at number three, as Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) defeated Jessie Ryals and Morgan Ernst 8-1. The Kohawks also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three singles, as Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) downed Montgomery.
In the championship match, Coe defeated Luther 5-2. The Kohawks held a 2-1 lead after doubles. At number one, Ferree and Birky downed Lola White-Baer and Maggie Helms 8-4. Birky also picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jenna Myers at number four singles.
At number two doubles, Watson and Lucero defeated Caroline Treis and Hailey Johnson 8-5. Lucero also picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over White-Baer at number one singles. Coe's final win came from Sebastian, as she downed Treis 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles.
This will be the third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and the fifth overall for the women's tennis program. The NCAA Tournament is scheduled to begin on May 9 at a location to be determined.
