MACOMB, Ill. - The Coe College baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning over Western Illinois, a NCAA Division I program, but it wasn't enough as the Leathernecks rallied for a 10-8 win.Sophomore Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) ripped a 3-1 fastball to center field to start the game.  After Wagner stole second, junior Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) walked.  Following a walk by sophomore Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie), junior Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) doubled to left center, plating both Wagner and Richmond.

With one out, freshman John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) singled to shortstop to score Velvick.  After a steal by Logan and a walk by freshman Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton), senior Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) singled down the right field line to plate Logan and Schisler.  As quickly as the Kohawks posted five runs in the top half, Western Illinois answered with a four-run first inning and tied the game with a run in the third inning.

Coe regained the lead once again in the top of the fourth inning.  Richmond led the inning off with a single to shortstop.  Velvick then singled up the middle.  A singled to first base by Schisler loaded the bases with no outs for senior Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity).  McAllister hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Richmond.  Once again, the Leathernecks tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and took their first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Kohawk bats awoke once again in the seventh inning.  Senior Michael Szela (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) singled up the middle on a 1-2 pitch to start the inning.  A sacrifice bunt by DeAngelis moved Szela to second.  After Reiner was hit by a pitch, freshman Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) singled through the left side to load the bases.

Freshman Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) singled to plate Szela to tie the game.  Richmond then reached on a fielders choice to shortstop that scored Reiner, giving the Kohawks an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.  After a scoreless seventh, the Leathernecks answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.

Richmond and Schisler each finished with two hits and a double apiece.  Richmond scored two runs, while Schisler and Reiner each had two RBI.  Alec Lewis (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) took the loss for the Kohawks on the mound.  The junior falls to 3-3 in 1.2 innings pitched.

The Kohawks return to action on Friday when they host ninth-ranked Buena Vista to start a 3-game weekend series.  Friday's nine-inning game will begin at 3:40 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
