SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The season came to an end Thursday for the Coe College women's tennis team, as Grinnell defeated Coe 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Grinnell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, winning all three matches in tight battles. At number one doubles, Shirlene Luk and Clothilde, ranked 13th in the ITA Central Region, won the final two games to defeat Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) 8-6. Grinnell looked to have number two doubles locked up, as Sadhana Athreya and Emma Macdonald led Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) 7-2. Lucero and Watson came roaring back, winning five-straight games to tie the match at 7-7 before the Pioneer squad won the final two for a 9-7 victory.
At number three doubles, Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) held a 6-5 lead, but Grinnell's team of Hanna Feldman and Shanaz Daneshdoost won four of the final five games, taking a 9-7 victory.
The Pioneers first singles win came at number four, as Feldman defeated Birky 6-2, 6-2. Grinnell won the match at number six, as Macdonald downed Hoffmann 6-4, 6-1.
Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) was leading 6-4, 1-2 at number three singles, while Watson won the first set 6-3 and was trailing 3-4 in the second set at number five singles when the match was called.
The Kohawks finish the year 19-6, having won three-straight Iowa Conference Championships and three-straight berths in the NCAA Tournament. Coe will lose just two starters from its lineup this year in Lucero and Hoffmann. Coe will kick-off the 2014-15 season on Aug. 31, as the Kohawks take on Lake Forest and Edgewood in Lake Forest, Ill.
