CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kohawk baseball team came close to upsetting ninth-ranked Buena Vista on Friday, but fell in extra innings.  The Beavers scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning for the 11-9 win.The Beavers scored the game's first runs in the fifth inning.  After tallying just three hits in the first four innings, Buena Vista scored four runs on five hits in the fifth inning to open the game up.  The Kohawks slowly clawed back at the Beavers.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) tripled a 3-1 pitch to right field.  WIth one out, sophomore Jeff Wagner (Genesseo, Ill./Genesseo) grounded out to shortstop to plate DeAngelis.

After a 1-2-3 sixth for the Beavers, Coe continued to climb back into the game with two more runs.  Junior Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) hit the first pitch to left field for a double.  With Richmond moving to third on a wild pitch, sophomore Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) doubled down the left field line to score Richmond.  Velvick then scored on a double to left center by senior Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity).

Coe once again held the Beavers scoreless in the seventh inning and tacked on two more runs of its own.  Senior Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) singled the first pitch of the inning to left field.  After a pitching change for Buena Vista, Wagner moved Reiner to second on a sacrifice bunt.  With a 1-1 count, freshman Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) hit his first career home run down the right field line.  The two-run shot put the Kohawks ahead for the first time in the game.

The Beavers appeared to put the game away in the top of the eighth inning with five runs on four hits once again, but the Kohawks wouldn't go away.  Coe answered back with four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to extra innings after a scoreless ninth.  A three-run double to the centerfield fence by freshman Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) tied the game.

The Beavers finished the game in the 10th inning, scoring two runs on two hits and two Kohawk errors.  A one-out single in the bottom of the 10th by junior Nick Robertson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) was washed away by a game-ending double play.

McAllister led the Kohawks with four hits, while Nisenson added two.  Sobba added three RBI, while Nisenson had two.  Freshman Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) fell to 1-3 on the year with the loss.  Raisch gave up five runs, four earned, in 2.1 innings.  He struck out three.  Senior Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) received a no-decision in 7.2 innings on the mound.  The southpaw struck out six while giving up six earned runs.

The Kohawks return to action on Saturday as they face the ninth-ranked Beavers once again.  The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1p.m. at Daniels Park.
