CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team recorded its fifth-straight win with a doubleheader sweep of Simpson Saturday.  Coe won the first game 3-2 and took the nightcap 3-0.The Kohawks put the first run on the scoreboard in the second inning.  With one out, senior Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) pounded a 3-2 fastball over the right field fence to put the Kohawks up 1-0.

Coe extended the lead in the fourth inning.  Senior Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) hit the first pitch of the inning for a double down the right field line.  With sophomore Emily Burress (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) pinch running for Hanse, sophomore Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) doubled down the left field line, plating Burress.  With an over throw by the left fielder, Zaugg also scored on the play.

The Storm threatened in the seventh inning, plating two runs, but the Kohawks recorded the third out on a strikeout with two runners on.  The Kohawks tallied six hits on the day, with Schwenker recording two.  Freshman Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) recorded her 15th win of the season in six innings in the circle.  She struck out nine, while giving up just two hits.  Schwenker earned her second save of the season in one inning of work.  She struck out three batters, while not allowing a hit.

Coe spread its three runs out in the first game, tallying runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.  With two outs in the third, freshman Katie King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) singled up the middle.  On the very next pitch, junior Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/SE Polk) doubled to right center to plate King.

In the third, senior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) singled on a bunt with one out.  Leonard then stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch.  With one out, freshman Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) grounded out to shortstop, but plated Leonard on the play.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Schwenker homered her first pitch of the at-bat to dead center field, her second long ball of the afternoon.  Coe again shut down a Simpson rally in the seventh, leaving two runners on base.

Wedemeier recorded two of the Kohawks six hits in the nightcap.  Schwenker earned her ninth win in the circle, throwing all seven innings.  The southpaw struck out six, while giving up seven hits.
