CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In a thrilling pair of Iowa Conference games, the Coe baseball team split with ninth-ranked Buena Vista Saturday. The Kohawks took the first game 6-5, while dropping the second 5-4.The Kohawks scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning. Sophomore
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) doubled to left center to start the inning. With two outs, freshman
Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill/Central) sent a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for the first runs of the game. The Beavers answered back with two runs in the top of the third.
Coe added another run in the third inning. Junior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill/Dundee Crown) sent a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to put the Kohawks back in the lead. After a two-run fifth inning for the Beavers, Coe answered back in the sixth.
Velvick started the sixth with a single to left field. With one out, he stole second. With two outs, Nisenson singled to left field to plate Velvick. With one out in the seventh, Buena Vista plated the go-ahead run, but the Kohawks were far from out of the game.
Pinch hitting, freshman
Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) singled a 1-2 pitch to left field. With one out, and a 1-1 count, junior
Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill/Morrison) blasted a game-winning walk-off home run to right field.
Nisenson and Velvick led the Kohawks with three and two hits respectively. Nisenson added three RBI, while Schisler had two. Junior
Cody Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) recorded his third win of the year in seven innings on the mound. He struck out four batters.
After giving up five runs in the first three innings, the Coe bats took fire late in the game. The Kohawks walked three runners on base with one out in the sixth. With one out, Velvick hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate senior
Michael Szela (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy).
Trailing 5-1, the Kohawks staged a late inning rally in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Pinch hitting, junior
Nick Robertson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) singled to shortstop. A walk by freshman
John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) put two runners on for the Kohawks. Junior
Jacob Schwind (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) singled to right field to load the bases. A walk by Nisenson on five pitches made the game 5-2 with the bases still loaded.
Richmond then reached on an error to plate Schwind and Logan, cutting the lead to one. A 1-2 lineout to centerfield ended the game for the Kohawks.
