CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team swept league-leading Wartburg Tuesday at Daniels Park.  The Kohawks won 7-2 in game one and came from behind for a 12-11 win in the nightcap to clinch the tournament berth.The Kohawks scored the first run of the afternoon as sophomore Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) blasted a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to lead off the fourth inning.  The Kohawks would leave two runners on base in the fourth inning.

Coe struck again in the fifth inning.  With one out, junior Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown), the reigning Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week, doubled to left field.  A single to right field by junior Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) moved Richmond to third.  After stealing second, Schisler moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher, which also allowed Richmond to score from third. 

With two outs, freshman Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) was hit by a pitch.  Nisenson then stole second and scored, along with Schisler, on a single through the right side by freshman Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X).

Looking to put the game away, the Kohawks added three more runs in the sixth inning.  With one out, senior Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity) reached on a bunt single.  McAllister moved to second on a single to left center by freshman Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina).  A walk by Richmond loaded the bases for Schisler.

Schisler singled the first pitch of the at-bat to left center to plate McAllister.  With two outs, Tunning scored on a wild pitch, as Schisler and Richmond moved up.  On the same play, an error by the catcher allowed Richmond to score and an error by the third baseman moved Schisler to third, where he was left stranded to end the inning.

The Kohawks tagged reigning Iowa Conference Player of the Year Jerrold Martijn of Wartburg for seven runs on nine hits.  Martijn walked four in the loss.  Coming into the first game, Martijn was 8-0 on the season and 7-0 lifetime in the Iowa Conference.

Schisler nailed three of the Kohawks nine hits.  Richmond finished with two runs scored, while Sobba drove in two runs.  Senior Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) improved to 4-2 on the  year with the complete game win.  The southpaw gave up just two earned runs on five hits.

After giving up a double and two home runs in the first inning of the nightcap, Coe bounced back for a 12-11 victory.  Trailing 4-0, the Kohawks tallied three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Sophomore Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) hit the first pitch for a single to center field.  With one out, Richmond doubled a 1-0 pitch down the left field line to move Wagner to third.  Two pitches later, Schisler blasted his second home run of the season to left field, which plated both Wagner and Richmond.

With Wartburg scoring anothe run in the top of the second, Coe cut the lead to one again in the second.  Sobba drilled a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for a lead-off double.  Sobba moved to third as freshman Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) grounded out to second.  Another ground by to second by Wagner plated Sobba.

Trailing by one, the Kohawks lit up the scoreboard in the third inning with five runs on five hits.  Richmond led the inning off with a single through the right side.  Richmond moved to second as Schisler reached on an error by the second baseman.  Velvick then drove the next pitch over the left field fence, plating both Richmond and Schisler on his fifth long ball of the season.  With one out, freshman John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) doubled to right field. 

With two outs, DeAngelis singled through the left side to plate Logan.  A double by Wagner to right field was deep enough to score DeAngelis.

The Knights tied the game in the top of the fourth with a four-run inning.  Coe wouldn't let the Knights hold the lead for long, as they bounced back for one run in the bottom half of the inning.  With one out, Sobba doubled to right center.  After a walk by DeAngelis, Wagner reached on a fielders choice as DeAngelis was out at second, but Sobba moved to third.  A double down the left field line by Nisenson plated Sobba.

With one run in the top of the sixth, the Knights tied the game at 10.  Wartburg added another run in the top of the seventh to take the lead.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Sobba singled to left field on a 3-1 pitch.  Freshman Brandon Janss (Belle Plaine, Iowa/Belle Plaine) pinch ran for Sobba as junior Jacob Schwind (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) pinch hit for DeAngelis.

Schwind doubled a 2-2 pitch to right center, moving Janss to third.  Junior Joe Swanson (Marion, Iowa/Marion) then pinch ran for Schwind.  With Wagner at the plate, Janss scored on a passed ball that also moved Swanson, the game winning run, to third.  After an intenionall walk to Wagner, Nisenson drove an 0-1 pitch to center field to plate Swanson for the game-winning RBI single.

Sobba finished with three hits, while Wagner, Nisenson, Richmond and Schisler each added two.  Richmond, Schisler and Sobba all scored two runs, while Schisler and Velvick drove in three apiece.  Wagner and Nisenson also drove in two runs.  Freshman Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) improved to 3-3 on the year in 2.1 innings on the mound.  Raisch struck out two, while giving up four hits.  Junior Alec Lewis (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) took the no decision in four innings on the hill.  Lewis struck out three, while giving up five earned runs on 11 hits.

With Wednesday off, the Kohawks will play five games over the next four days.  Two of those games will be at home, begining with a nine-inning game against Grinnell on Thursday at 4:30.
