DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team moved into first place in the Iowa Conference standings Friday with an 8-4 extra innings win over Luther. The Kohawks are tied with Wartburg at 13-6 in the league with three conference games remaining.The Kohawks jumped out to an early lead in the nine-inning game. Senior
Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity) tripled to right center to start the game. McAllister scored as sophomore
Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) grounded out to first base. Junior
Cody Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) held the Norse to just one hit in the first four innings of the game.
Coe extended its lead in the fourth inning with two runs on just one hit, while the Norse committed two errors. Coe left three runners on base to end the inning. Freshman
Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) was hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth. Sobba moved to third as sophomore
Justin Svehla (Lincoln, Neb./Northeast) reached first, and moved to second, on an error by the first baseman.
A sacrifice fly by senior
Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) plated Sobba and moved Svehla to third, putting the Kohawks ahead 2-0. A single by McAllister to the pitcher froze Svehla at third, leaving runners on the corners for Wagner. The second error of the inning on the first baseman allowed Wagner to reacch first and Svehla to score.
The Kohawks used their second lead-off triple of the game, this time by sophomore
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie), to start the fifth inning. A ground ball to second base by freshman
Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) plated Velvick from third.
With the Kohawks taking a 4-0 lead, the Norse added a run in the fifth on one hit an an error by the Kohawks. Coe was held to just one hit in the last three innings of regulation, while the Norse added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game. Both teams left a runner on base in the ninth inning.
With one out, the Kohawks came alive again in the extra frame, plating four runs on three hits to put the game away. A one-out walk by Sobba started the Kohawk rally. Junior
Joe Swanson (Marion, Iowa/Marion) pinch-ran for Sobba. In a pinch-hit situation, junior
Jacob Schwind (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch.
As freshman
Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) pinch ran for Swchwind, Reiner doubled to right field to plate Swanson and move Tunning to third, giving the Kohawks the go-ahead run. After McAllister was intenionally walked to load the bases, Wagner singled to center field to add the first insurance run for the Kohawks as Tunning scored. A double by junior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) plated McAllister and Reiner, extending the Kohawks lead to 8-4 in the extra session. Raisch faced just four batters in the Norse's 10th inning, earning two groundouts and a strikeout, while walking one runner on to seal the win for the Kohawks.
Richmond led the Kohawks with three hits, while McAllister and Reiner had two apiece. McAllsiter also crossed the plate two times. Wagner added three RBIs, while Richmond and Reiner had two apiece.
Raisch improved to 5-0 in the Iowa Conference with the complete game win. Raisch struck out eight, while giving up four earned runs on four hits in 10 innings on the hill.
