WAVERLY, Iowa - For the first time in school history, the Coe baseball team went undefeated during the regular season against Wartburg. The Kohawks used a 9-6 win Wednesday to complete their portion of the Iowa Conference schedule with a 14-8 record.The Knights scored first in the nine-inning game, but it was the Kohawks offensive outburst in the middle innings that led to the win. A lead-off double by Ben Roemmich led to the first run of the game for the Knights in the bottom of the first inning. The Kohawks didn't let the Knight lead stand for long, as they answered with a run in the top of the second.

Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) with one out started the inning. A single to left center by freshman
Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) moved Nisenson to second. An error by the shortstop allowed Nisenson to score and freshman
Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) to reach base.
Wartburg regained the lead again in the third inning with a lead-off home run by Zach Nagle. After 1-2-3 innings by both teams, the Kohawks fired off two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Senior
Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Medon-Unity) led the inning off with a single to left field. McAllister moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo). A single to shortstop by junior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) moved McAllister to third. With two outs, sophomore
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) doubled down the left field line to plate McAllister and Richmond.
Coe came back for two more runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead. With one out, Tunning singled up the middle. A single to center field by senior
Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) moved Tunning to third. Tunning then scored on a single to left center by McAllister that moved Reiner to second. With two away, Richmond singled to center field, plating Reiner in the process.
For the third-straight inning, the Kohawks added two more runs to the scoreboard in the seventh inning. With one out, Nisenson doubled won the right field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. A walk by Sobba put runners on the corners for the Kohawks. Tunning hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Nisenson. Another single by Reiner moved freshman
Mark Proust (St. Charles, Ill./East), who was pinch running for Sobba, to third. On a wild pitch, Proust crossed the plate.
Coe added some more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Wagner led the inning off with a walk before stealing second. Richmond moved Wagner to third on a fly ball to center field. A two-run home run by junior
Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) made it 9-2 in favor of the Kohawks. Wartburg added four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, but left two runners on base as the Kohawks escaped with the lead.
McAllister, Richmond, Nisenson and Reiner led the Kohawks with two hits apiece. Schisler and Velvick each drove in two runs, while Nisenson crossed the plate twice himself. Junior
Cody Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) improved to 6-0 in the Iowa Conference with the win on the hill. He struck out three while giving up two earned runs. Junior
Alec Lewis (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) earned the Kohawks first save of the season in 1.1 innings on the mound.
The Kohawks will take the week off before returning to Daniels Park for their final home game of the year against Mount Mercy. Coe will return to Iowa Conference play on Thursday in the opening round of the Iowa Conference Tournament.
