PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team spoiled the first Iowa Conference Tournament experience for Dubuque Thursday morning with an 8-0, six inning win in the opening round. Coe improved to 7-6 all-time in the postseason tournament.Senior
Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) opened the bottom of the first with a single to shortstop. Leonard then moved to second on a passed ball and scored on the same play as the catcher overthrew the play at second base. The run by Leonard was her 51st of the season, breaking the school record held by Ashley Wagner in 2005.
The Kohawks extended the lead in the second inning with three runs. With one out, senior
Megan Jack (Independence, Iowa/Independence) reached on an error by the pitcher. An infield single by freshman
Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) moved Jack to second. A double by Leonard plated Jack and moved Hanson to third. A single to center field by freshman
Katie King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) scored both Hanson and Leonard.
Coe added another run in the third inning as sophomore
CC Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) reached on a walk. A sacrifice bunt by junior
Mackenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) moved freshman
Jackie Finley (Lone Tree, Iowa/Lone Tree), whom was pinch running for Williams, to second. After a walk by Hanson, Finley stole home and Hanson stole second simultaneously.
The Kohawks finished the game early in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs. Leonard led the inning off with her third triple of the season. A single to center field by junior
Erica Smothers (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) plated Leonard. A double to left center by junior
Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) plated Smothers. With sophomore
Emily Burress (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) pinch running for Zaugg, senior
Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) singled to center field to plate Buress for the final run of the game.
Leonard and Zaugg led the Kohawks with three hits apiece. King and Hanse added two apiece. Leonard scored three runs on the day, while King drove in two runs.
In the circle, freshman
Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) joined an elite group of Kohawk pitchers as she earned her 18th win of the season. With eight strikeouts in the game, Simon became just the fourth player to throw 200 or more strikeouts in a season. It was the sixth time it has happened in school history.
The Kohawks improved to 31-10 on the year with the win. Coe will face Wartburg Thursday at 4 p.m. in Pella for the right to face the winner of the Luther-Central game.
