PELLA, Iowa - For the first time in the history of the Iowa Conference Softball Tournament, the Wartburg Softball team was handed a defeat today at the hands of the Kohawks. Coe used a 2-0 win to advance to the championship game of the winners bracket Friday.The Kohawks held on for their fourth 1-0 or 2-0 win of the season, but it didn't come easy against the second-seeded and seventh ranked team in the country. Coe used two hits in the first inning to load the bases, but stranded all three runners.
Senior
Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) tripled to lead off the third inning. Two pitches later, freshman
Katie King (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate the first run of the game.
Coe left two more runners on base to end the third inning, as well as leaving two on during the fourth inning. Coe scored the final run of the game off an error in the sixth inning. Junior
Mackenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) doubled to lead off the inning. With one out, freshman
Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Hanson advanced to second and Lang scored on the play, putting the Kohawks ahead 2-0.
The Kohawk defense finished the game down the stretch, not allowing a single Knight to reach base in the final three innings of the game.
Senior
Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) earned the win for the Kohawks as she improved to 13-5 on the year. While striking out three and allowing just three hits. At the plate, Schwenker walked three times and connected on a hit in her other appearance.
The Kohawks will face Luther at 2 p.m. on Friday in the championship game of the winners bracket.
