CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two doubles teams, along with senior
Sam Zerbib (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) and freshman
Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) have advanced to the Iowa Conference Tournament Semifinals.In Flight A singles play, Zerbib upset sixth-seeded Lucas Boyd of Central 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. He followed the impressive first round win with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (1) win over Mark Mateski of Luther in the second round. Zerbib faced teammate, junior
Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) in the quarterfinals. Zerbib came away a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) winner over Janssen. Zerbib will face second-seeded Harrison WHiteley of Luther in the semifinals.
Janssen advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-4 win over third-seeded Claudio Giraldi of Dubuque in the opening round. He then defeated Utsab Rijal of Luther 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5) in the second round before falling to Zerbib in the quarterfinals.
Freshman
Ryan King (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), the tournaments fourth seed, was a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (6) winner over Chris Buckingham of Wartburg in the first round. King retired against Thomas Orser of Wartburg in the second round.
In Flight B Singles, Roger advanced to the semifinals with three straight-set wins. He defeated Erik Becker of Loras 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and beat Kyle Shilling of Simpson 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Roger also earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tyler Van Heest of Luther in the quarterfinals. The freshman will face fifth-seeded Joe LaFountaine of Luther in the semifinals.
A pair of Kohawk doubles teams will square off in the semifinals at Flight A Doubles. Top-seeded sophomore
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and Zerbib beat Sundstrom and Mateski of Luther 8-2 in the quarterfinals after a first round bye. The top-seeed pair will face senior
Joey Lankelma (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) and freshman
Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) in the semifinals. Khristenko and Lankelma beat Boyd and Bowser of Central 8-3 in the first round before beating third-seeded Whiteley and Gendron of Luther 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded team of sophmore
Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) and King beat Martin and Piepkorn of Luther 8-6 in the first round before falling to Burman and Jung of Luther 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
Saturday's action will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Clark Racquet Center on the campus of Coe College in Cedar Rapids with semifinal round of singles play in all three flights followed by singles placement matches and semifinal and placement matches in doubles.
