CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe men's tennis team placed five players on the All-Iowa Conference team Saturday. Senior Sam Zerbib (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) earned a spot in singles and won the doubles championship with sophomore Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus).Zerbib placed fourth in Flight A Singles, falling to eventual runner-up Harrison Whiteley of Luther 3-6, 6-4, 0-1 (4) in the semifinals. In Flight B singles,
No. 2-seeded Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village)
defeated No. 5-seed Joe LaFountaine
of Luther 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals and top-seed Tyler Zinnecker of Luther 6-4, 6-1 in the Championship match to
take the title. Roger is Coe's
first Flight B singles champion since Chris McGrath in 2001.
In Flight A doubles, Rausa and Zerbib
defeated Luther's Thomas Orser/Utsab
Rijal 8-5 in the Championship match. Rausa/Zerbib placed third a year ago.
Luther's Samriddh Burman/Nate Jung
captured third place with a 9-8 (5) victory over senior Joey Lankelma (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) and freshman Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia). Lankelma also placed fourth a year
ago.
Along with the four semifinalist in Flight A, junior Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) earned All-Iowa Conference honors for making the quarterfinalist of the Flight A Singles bracket.
