CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The third-seeded Coe College baseball team earned a 10-3 opening round win over sixth-seeded Simpson before falling 3-2 in the semifinals to second-seeded Luther.  Coe jumped out to an early lead, putting a run across the plate in the bottom of the first inning on one hit and an error. Sophomore Jeff Wagner (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) singled up the middle before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central).  With two outs, junior Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) reached on an error by the first baseman, allowing Wagner to score.

After the second 1-2-3 inning by the Storm in a row, the Kohawk offense exploded in the second inning.  Coe tallied five runs on five hits to bust the game open.  With one out, freshman John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) singled up the middle before stealing second.  With two outs, the Kohawk rallied started.  A double to left field by senior Jon Reiner (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) plated Logan.  Wagner was then hit by a pitch before Nisenson singled down the left field line to plate Reiner. After Wagner stole third, junior Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) doubled to right center to plate Nisenson and Wagner.

Simpson scored its first run on one hit and a Kohawk error in the third inning.  The Storm left the bases loaded in the top half of the third before the Kohawks added two more runs in the bottom half.  With one out, Logan tripled to left center.  Freshman Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) put another ball in the left center gap for a double to plate Logan.  Tunning later scored as Wagner reached on an error by the first baseman.

Coe put its final runs on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, tallying two runs on two hits, while leaving two on base.  A single by Nisenson and a walk by Richmond started the inning for the Kohawks.  A groundout by Schisler advanced both runners before senior Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity) drove both runners in with a single to left field.

Nisenson and Logan led the Kohawks with three hits apiece.  Richmond, Schisler, McAllister and Reiner all had two hits.  Richmond and McAllister drove in two runs each, while four Kohawks scored twice apiece.  Senior Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) earned the win for the Kohawks.  He tossed a complete game, while striking out three batters.

The Kohawk bats cooled off in the second game, managing just two runs on six hits.  Luther struck first with two runs in the top of the second.  One of the runs was unearned.

Coe cut the lead in half in the fourth inning.  Richmond singled to start the inning, while moving to second as Schisler flew out in foul territory to left field.  Richmond moved to third on a groundout by Velvick and scored on a passed ball.

The Kohawks tied the game in the fifth inning, as Logan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Coe wasn't able to capitalize on the opportunity and left the bases loaded to end the inning.  Thanks to a lead-off walk, Luther scored the winning run in the seventh inning.

Richmond tallied three of the Kohawks' six hits.

Coe will return to action on Friday at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium against the loser of the Wartburg-Loras game late Thursday night.
