CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the third time this season, Coe beat Loras with a strong offensive output. This was the biggest of the three wins over the regular-season champion, as the Duhawks were eliminated from the IIAC Tournament. The Kohawks scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) walked to lead off the inning for the Kohawks. With one out, senior
Tyler McAllister (Ursa, Ill./Mendon-Unity) singled to left field, moving Sobba to second. With two outs, junior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) singled to left field, plating Sobba for the first run of the game.
Loras scored one run in the bottom of the third, as Coe got the second out of the inning in a run down. The lone Duhawk run of the inning came during the rundown.
Coe broke the game open for the first time in the fourth inning with three runs on three hits. Junior
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) singled up the middle to start the inning. Velvick moved to second as freshman
Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) grounded out to the pitcher. Freshman
John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) singled to right field, plating Velvick. Another walk by Sobba moved Logan to second. Both runners moved into scoring position on a double steal.
The Kohawks scored their second run of the inning as freshman
Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Logan. McAllister earned his second hit of the game with a triple to right center, plating Sobba.
As quickly as the Kohawks opened the game up, Loras fought right back to take its first lead of the game. The Duhawks added four runs on three hits, along with a pair of Kohawk errors to take a 5-4 lead.
Coe regained the lead again in the fifth inning on a pair of runs. Richmond singled to third base to start the inning. With one out, Velvick bashed a shot over the left field wall to put Coe back in the lead.
With a 6-5 lead, Coe added another run in the sixth inning. With one out, McAllister tallied his third hit of the game. This hit brought McAllister a double from the cycle as he hit a home run into the pavilion down the left field line.
The Kohawks kept their run streak alive in the seventh, adding another run on two hits. With one out, Velvick singled to right center. After the second out of the inning, Velvick stole second. In scoring position, Velvick was plated as Logan singled to left field.
With Coe leading 8-5, Loras scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to make the game interesting. Although they made the game close for a few innings, Coe busted the game open for the final time in the top of the ninth inning.
Junior
Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) doubled to left center to start the inning. Velvick was hit by a pitch before Nisenson moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Logan was intentionally walked to load the bases. A single up the middle by Sobba plated Schisler for the first run of the inning. Loras recorded the second out of the inning as freshman
Max Tunning (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) reached on a fielders choice. A walk by McAllister brought in Logan. Coe added the final runs of the game on a single to right field by junior
Joe Swanson (Marion, Iowa/Marion).
McAllister and Velvick led the Kohawks with three hits apiece. Swanson, Richmond, Schisler, Nisenson and Logan had two hits each. Velvick had a game-high three runs scored, while Logan and Sobba crossed the plate twice.
Coe will return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Buena Vista. The loser will be eliminated, while the winner will face Wartburg at 1 p.m. in another elimination game.
