MARIETTA, Ohio - Senior Holly Rader (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner) and sophomore Ashley Schnell (Lincoln, Neb./North Star) were the first two competitors for the Coe College track and field team at the 2009 NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon.<a href=Ashley Schnell" src="/images/mug_shots/2008-09/ashley_schnell_388_wto.jpg" align="right" border="0">
Schnell, a national qualifier in the 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run, opened things for the Kohawks with a second place finish in the first heat of the 1,500-meter run.  Her time of 4:33.23 was just 0:00.31 behind Marie Borner of Bethel University for first place.  Borner's time broke the Don Drumm Stadium record on the campus of Marietta College.

Schnell's time was the second best overall, advancing her to the finals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Schnell entered the meet with a time of 4:31.62 earlier in the season, setting a school record.  With a first place finish on Saturday, Schnell would become the first Kohawk women's outdoor track and field national champion since Elizabeth Messerly won the 800-meter run in 1988 and 1989.

Rader will leave the program as the record holder in the event.  Her throw of 167' 10 1/2" broke her own record earlier this season.

Sophomore Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) will participate in the discus throw at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, while freshman Keelie Finnel (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) will run in the 400-meter run at 2:55 p.m. Friday.
