CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The 2009 NCAA Division III Softball National Runner-Up Coe Softball team has earned numerous postseason honors, both on and off the field. A total of eight players have been recognized.Senior shortstop Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) earned the most honors for the Kohawks. For the fourth-straight season, Leonard earned All-Iowa Conference honors. She was named to the first team for the second-straight year, while being a second team selection her freshman and sophomore year. On top of that, she was named the Iowa Conference Player of the Year.
Leonard joins Paige Stamp (2000), Jamie Dalbey (2002) and Amy Ernst (2005) as the only other Kohawks to be named the Iowa Conference Player of the Year. For the third time during his tenure at Coe, Head Coach Bob Timmons was named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year. Timmons shared the honor with Central's George Wares, whose team won the regular season championship. Timmons was also named coach of the year in 1999 and 2005.
Junior catcher Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) and senior pitcher Sonja Schwenker (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) joined Leonard on the All-Iowa Conference First Team. Schwenker was chosen as an utiltiy player. This is the third all-conference honor for Wedemeier, as she was a second team selection the past two years.
Coe added two more players to the second team in freshman pitcher Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) and senior first baseman Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Hanse, an at-large selection, earned her third all-conference honor, as she was first team selection in 2006 and 2007.
Four Kohawks went on to be named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Team. Leonard was a first team at-large selection, which made her eligible for All-American honors. Simon and Schwenker were named to the second team, while junior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) was named to the third team.
Leonard earned the final on-field honor for the Kohawks, as she was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American team. Leonard became the first Kohawk softball player to earn All-American honors in two years. Leonard was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.
Four Kohawks earned Academic All-Iowa Conference honors. With four honorees, Coe had the second most of any team in the conference. Seniors Megan Jack (Independence, Iowa/Independence) and Danielle Leavens (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) joined Zaugg and Hanse on the team, all having over a 3.5 GPA.
