DUBUQUE, Iowa - Both the Coe College men's and women's cross country teams had a runner in the top five Friday at the Loras Invitational, as both Coe teams finished second.
Lucy Conroy (Mt. Vernon, Iowa/Mt. Vernon) led the way for the Kohawk women, as she finished third in 23:09.5, the ninth fastest time in school history. Maddie Bain (Kingsley, Iowa/Woodbury Central) and Mareena Franke (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) joined Conroy in the top 15 with 11th and 12th place finishes. Bain finished in 24:18.0, while Franke crossed in 24:18.2. Abie Mellick (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) finished 20th in 25:00.3, while Samya Lewis rounded out the scoring for Coe with a 27th place finish in 25:16.4. Beth Heims (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) was 36th in 25:54.5, while Holly Wisnousky (Fairfax, Iowa/Prairie) was 40th in 26:07.2
The Kohawk women finished second with 71 points. Central won the team title with 32 points, while Dubuque's Fabiola Ortiz took top individual honors in 22:26.8.
Three Kohawk men finished in the top 10, led by Ryan Izer (Lawler, Iowa/Turkey Valley)'s fifth place finish in 26:52.3. Nathan Haerr (Fairfield, Iowa/Fairfield) was eighth in 27:08.3, while Nick Poff (St. Joseph, Ill./Ogden) was 10th in 27:16.4. Austin Springsteen (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) and Derek Dinderman (Palo, Iowa/Vinton-Shellsburg) rounded out the Coe scoring in 14th and 15th. Springsteen crossed in 27:38.8, while Dinderman finished in 27:42.9. Beau Freeborn (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) finished 19th in 27:53.1, while Colton James-Wells (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty) was 20th in 27:53.4.
The Kohawk men finished second with 48 points, while Loras was first with 47. NIACC's Imad Amenzou won the individual title in 25:49.4.
Coe returns to action Oct. 31 at the Iowa Conference Championships in Dubuque. The women run at 11 a.m., while the men follow at 12 p.m.
