CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - With the game on the line, the Kohawk defense forced a fumble, and recovered it, giving Head Coach Steve Staker his first win at Clark Field.  With the Kohawks leading 9-7, Augustana lined up for a 23-yard field goal, but the Kohawk defense disrupted the play, while holding on for the win. With the two teams combining for over 500 yards of offense, neither team could find the end zone to finish their drives. With a late first quarter touchdown, the Kohawks had the only points of the first 42:56 of the game.

The Kohawks took the ball to start the game, marching 44 yards on 11 plays to start the game.  Facing a third and three, sophomore Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) threw back-to-back incompletions, giving the Vikings the ball at their own 24-yard line.

The Vikings didn't have the ball long before being forced to punt, but a fumble by Boyle on the first play of the Kohawks second possession put the Vikings nearly in the red zone, as they recovered at the Coe 23-yard line.  After three-straight incompletions, in which the Kohawks had hurries by three different players on each play, the Vikings were forced to kick.  A 40-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Gibbons fell short.

Coe took over at its own 23-yard line and had a near-perfect drive down the field to put the first points of the season on the scoreboard.  The 10-play, 77 yard drive was capped by a one yard touchdown pass from Boyle to junior Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus).

The Kohawk defense came up big at the start of the second quarter ,holding the Vikings to minus seven yards of offense on three plays.  After forcing a punt, and driving 49-yards down the field, a 45-yard field goal by junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) fell just short.  The kick would have tied a career long for Rausa.

The two teams exchanged punts before the Vikings put together one final drive at the end of the first half.  Augustana drove 58 yards down the field in 6:03, but came up short as sophomore Jacob Breitbach (Panora, Iowa/Panorama) broke up a pass from David Lee in the end zone on fourth and three.

Senior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) and junior Nate Clear (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) combined for a sack on fourth down on the Vikings first possession of the second half.   The two teams then exchanged three punts before the Vikings put their first points of the season up.

Starting at their own 21-yard line, the Vikings drove 79 yards down the field in under five minutes to score.  The six-yard touchdown run by Jake Parke, along with the extra point by Ryan Gibbons, put the Vikings ahead with 2:04 to play in the third quarter.

With 11:52 to play in the game, Rausa connected on his first field goal of the season, capping a 65-yard drive with his 26-yard field goal.  It was the 21st field goal of the juniors career, the third most in school history.

The Vikings took a big gamble on the following possession that nearly paid off.  After a timeout, David Lee rushed up the middle on fourth and one.  After the chains were brought on the field, the officials signaled first down for the Vikings at the Coe 49-yard line.  Upon further review, the call was reversed, giving the Kohawks the ball at the 50.

Coe wasn't able to capitalize, but the punt by freshman Chase Cooling (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) was nearly downed inside the five-yard line, but bounced into the end zone.  After both teams exchanged punts once again, the Vikings took over at the Coe 38-yard line with 2:55 remaining in the game.

On fourth and six, Lee connected with Matt Downing for a 23-yard gain to keep the Viking hopes alive.  With :38 remaining, Parke ran for five yards to the Kohawk six-yard line.  After a timeout with :06 remaining, the Vikings lined up for a game-winning 23-yard field goal.  Kyle Hundman fumbled the snap, forced by Kyle Polich (Garwin, Iowa/Green Mountain-Garwin) and recovered by Seth Johnson (Glidden, Iowa/Glidden-Ralston).

The Kohawks finished with 275 yards of offense, including 207 through the air.  Augustana tallied just over 100 yards passing, but racked up 135 yards on the ground.  One big advantage was a perfect 2-for-2 in the red zone for Coe, while the Vikings were just 1-for-3.

Senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) finished with a team-high 39 yards rushing on 10 carries.  Robert Wood led all rushers with 44 yards for Augustana.  Boyle finished 25-for-32 passing for 207 yards.  Hist 25 completions ties him with Joe Brannen for the fifth most completions in a game in school history.

Junior Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) had a team-high 58 yards receiving on four receptions.  Downing had a game-high 71 yards receiving.  Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon) and Hammes had a game-high five receptions apiece.

Freshman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) had a game-high 12 tackles.  Senior All-American Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Thomas had 10 tackles apiece.  Senior Ross Yeast (West Liberty, Iowa/West Liberty) added nine tackles. Harrison had four quarterback hurries, while Weymiller had two.  Clear added a sack and a half.

The Kohawks return to action next Saturday as they travel to Gustavus for their final non-conference game.  It will be the season-opener for the Golden Gusties.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
