ST. PETER, Minn. - For the second week in a row, the Coe football game came down to the final seconds.  Just like last week, the Coe defense came up with the big play for the win, as sophomore Jacob Breitbach (Panora, Iowa/Panorama) intercepted a Golden Gusty pass in the end zone, sealing Coe's 27-24 win.Neither team could get anything going offensively in the first eight minutes of the game, as the two teams tallied just 37 yards, but the Gusties put the first points on the scoreboard on the next possession.  A 27-yard field goal by Tom Huepenbecke with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter put Gustavus on top 3-0.  The field goal capped a 12-play, 79 yard drive.

After the field goal, the Kohawk offense continued to struggle.  A 43-yard punt by freshman Chase Cooling (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) carried into the end zone for a touchback.  The Gusties ended the drive with negative five yards, while giving the Kohawks the ball back to end the first quarter, leading 3-0.

Three plays into the second quarter, the Kohawks had their first points of the game.  Junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) punched a 43-yard field goal through the uprights to tie the game at three with 14:13 to play in the opening half.

Three more punts by both teams gave the Kohawks the ball at the Gustavus 46-yard line with 4:56 to play in the first half.  A 28-yard completion from sophomore Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) to senior John McCarthy (Iowa City, Iowa/City) put the Kohawks in position for an 11-yard touchdown pass from Boyle to junior Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus), putting the Kohawks ahead 10-3.

To end the first half, the Gusties drove down to the Kohawk 36-yard line, but an interception in the end zone by junior Seth Johnson (Glidden, Iowa/Glidden-Ralston) ended the first half with the Kohawks leading 10-3.

The Golden Gusties took the ball to start the half, but held it for just 1:24, as the Kohawk defense forced a three-and-out, giving the Kohawks the ball at their own 37-yard line.  A 41-yard drive to the Gustavus 22-yard line resulted in Rausa's second field goal of the day, this time from 39-yards out with 10:09 to play in the third quarter.  The field goal was the 23rd of Rausa's career, tying him with Rims Roof for the second most in school history.

With Coe leading 13-3, senior Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) forced a fumble on third and one that fellow senior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) recovered at the Gustavus 44-yard line.

It took just three plays from there for the Kohawks to put another touchdown on the scoreboard.  After a five-yard rush by senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story), Boyle hooked up with junior Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) for a 43-yard gain to the Gustie two-yard line.  On the very next play, Boyle crossed the goal line, extending the Kohawk lead to 20-3.

The two teams then exchanged punts.  Coe lead 20-3 heading to the fourth quarter.  Thanks to a facemask penalty on the Kohawks, that would have forced the Gusties into a third and 15 situation.  Instead, Gustavus scored on a two-yard completions from Jordan Becker to Cody Sukalski, cutting the lead to 20-10 in favor of Coe.

After another exchange of punts, Boyle led the Kohawks on a five-play, 81-yard drive that was capped by a 70-yard touchdown pass from Boyle to junior Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon), putting Coe ahead 27-10 with 6:43 to play in the game.

It didn't take the Golden Gusties long to counter, as a 62-yard pass from Becker to Cameron Maurer, with a pitch to Blake Noenning put the Gusties at the Kohawk six-yard line.  One play later, Kendrick Hall crossed the goal line, as he cut the Kohawk lead to 10 points with 6:09 to play.

Gustavus then recovered an onside kick that led to a 13-yard touchdown pass from Becker to Elliott Herdina with 3:45 to play.  The Kohawks then recovered the next onside kick and were able to advance the ball to the Gustavus 35-yard line, where they were faced with a fourth and four situation.  Cooling punted to the Gustavus eight-yard line, leaving 92-yards of turf ahead of the Gusties, with just :39 to play and no timeouts.

On the first play of the drive, Cody Sukalski got past Breitbach and hauled in a 68-yard pass from Becker.  Becker then found Herdina for a 15-yard reception at the Coe 14-yard line.  Continuing with the passing theme, Becker looked for Noennig in the end zone, but senior Kyle Polich (Garwin, Iowa/Green Mountain-Garwin) broke it up in the corner of the end zone.  It was the fourth pass break-up of the game for Polich, the third most in school history.  With :09 to play in the game, Bretibach redeemed himself from the first play of the drive, as he picked off Becker's pass to seal the Kohawks second win of the season.

Boyle finished the game 26-for-42 for 373 yards.  His 26 completions are the fourth most in school history, while his 373 yards is also the fourth most passing yards in a single game.

Hammes finished with a team-high 15 carries for 32 yards, as he became just the 12th player in school history to rush for more than 300 carries in their career.  Four different Kohawks caught five or more passes, led by Hammes with seven for 60 yards.  Rozum, senior Robert Welborn (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) and Ratchford each hauled five receptions.  Rozum had a team-high 89 yards, whle Welborn had 57 and Ratchford 50.

Harrison led the defense with nine tackles, including a sack for six-yards lost.  Freshman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Waukon) had seven, along with senior Ross Yeast (West Liberty, Iowa/West Liberty).  Junior Nate Clear (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) added six tackles and two sacks.

The Kohawks open Iowa Conference play next Saturday when they host Luther.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Clark Field during Coe's Family Weekend.
