CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the first time all season, the Kohawks felt comfortable about the outcome before the final seconds in Saturday's Iowa Conference opener.  Coe scored early and held on for a 19-6 win over Luther at Clark Field, as they improved to 3-0 on the year. The Kohawk offense looked good on the opening drive of the game, as they marched 47 yards down the field on 12 plays, but a 37-yard field goal attempt by junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) sailed wide right.

Luther took over after the missed field goal, but weren't able to capitalize.  On fourth and six from Coe's 36-yard line, the Norse quick kicked out of bounds for 13 yards.  The First quarter ended with neither team having scored.

The Coe defensed forced a three-and-out on the Norse and turned it into the first points of the game.  Luther punter Donny Norlander dropped the snap in the end zone, while recovering it on his knees.  The result was a safety for the Kohawks, giving them an early 2-0 lead in the second quarter.

Coe looked to extend its lead on the next possession, but sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) fumbled at the Luther two-yard line, with Luther recovering the ball in the end zone for a touchback.

Luther was once again unable to capitalize and punted the ball back to the Kohawks.  Boyle took care of business this time around, completed 6-of-8 passes and rushing for a two-yard touchdown to put the Kohawks up 9-0.  In just over four minutes, the Kohawks went 77 yards on 13 plays.

Taking over with 2:34 to play in the first half, the Kohawks put the ball in the air once again.  In a hurry up offense, the Kohawks marched 72 yards on 11 plays, in just over two minutes for another touchdown.  This time Boyle used his arm, as he tossed a fade route into the corner of the end zone to junior Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus).  It was the third time Boyle has found Ratchford for a touchdown this season.

Neither team could score on its opening possession of the second half, but a kick catch interference call on the Kohawks helped the Norse on their second possession.  The penalty gave the Norse the ball at the Coe 28-yard line.  It took just three plays for the Norse to put the ball in the end zone on a one-yard run by Trevor Theobald.  The two-point rush attempted failed, leaving the score at 16-6 in favor of the Kohawks.  Neither team scored the remainder of the quarter.

On the opening possession of the fourth quarter, Luther drove 59-yards on 13 plays, but was stuffed on fourth and one from the Coe 12-yard line.  The Kohawks didn't score off the stop, but a season long 50-yard punt by freshman Chase Cooling (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) pinned the Norse at their own 24-yard line.

Just four plays later, the Kohawk defense came up big.  An interception by junior Cody Kriegal (Coggon, Iowa/North Linn) gave the Kohawks the ball back with 6:47 to play.  Coe took nearly four minutes off the clock on the 65-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal by Rausa.  The kick gave him 24 field goals for his career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the schools career list.

Starting at their own 32-yard line, the Norse weren't able to drive in the final 2:52, finishing the drive with zero yards of offense, while getting the ball back with 1:56 to play.  Coe took a knee on the final three plays, sealing its third win of the year.

Senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland Story) finished with a game-high 98 yards rushing on 17 carries.  He also ran for a season-long rush of 33 yards in the game.  Freshman Brendan Leiran (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) rushed six times for 35 yards, including a long of 16-yards.  Boyle also tallied 14 carries for 28 yards.

Boyle finished the game 19-of-34 in the air for 202 yards.  Junior Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) had a game-high 71 yards on five receptions.  Ratchford finished with two catches for 34 yards.

Senior linebacker Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a team-high 11 tackles.  Freshman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) tallied double-digit tackles for the second time in his young career, as he finished with 10 tackles and two tackles for loss.  Senior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) tallied seven tackles.

The Kohawks return to action next Saturday, as they take to the road for the first time in the Iowa Conference.  Coe will take its five-game IIAC road winning streak to Pella for a 1 p.m. matchup with the 16-ranked Dutch.
