PELLA, Iowa - Central took the first two sets of the match, but the Kohawks wouldn't go away Tuesday night at Kuyper Gymnasium. Coe took sets three and four, but lost the lead in the fifth to give the Dutch the win in their home opener.Central led from start to finish in the first set, but the Kohawks made it close in the middle. Trailing 8-3, Coe went on a 4-0 run, but Central quickly answered with 7-1 run of its own. Central went on to take the first set 25-18.
Coe held seven leads in the second set, as late as 16-15, but Central pulled away when it mattered. The Kohawks kept it close until the final points, as the Dutch came way with a 25-21 set win.
The Kohawks came alive in the third set, using a 6-2 run halfway through to take a 16-11 lead. Coe would hold the lead for the rest of the set, finishing with a 25-22 win, forcing a fourth set.
Central jumped all over the Kohawks early in the fourth set, as they led 6-1 on three kills and two aces. With the match tied at 18, Coe went on a 7-4 run to force the fifth and deciding set.
Opposite of the fourth set, Coe jumped out to the 4-1 lead this time around, but Central quickly answered to take a 9-5 lead. Coe wasn't able to cut the lead to less than four the remainder of the match, as the Dutch earned a 15-11 decision in the fifth set.
Sophomore
Molly Steffens (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) had a match-high 22 kills, while hitting .333. She also tallied 14 digs and two block assists. Sophomore
Kaitlin McClimon (Dewitt, Iowa/Central) finished with 15 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. She also had four block assists.
Freshman
Emily Ryan (Mt. Vernon, Iowa/Mt. Vernon) had 41 assists and 11 digs in the loss. Freshmen
Elizabeth McDonnell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and
Brittany Shickell (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) each had two service aces. Shickell also had a team-high 15 digs.
Coe will return to action this weekend, as they host the Kohawk Invite Friday and Saturday.
