MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - With a season-high 20 hits and 18 runs, the Coe College baseball team rolled by rival Cornell College in the final Bremner Cup Series matchup of the year.
Cornell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with an infield single and a bases loaded walk in the first inning. Coe cut the lead in half in the second, as Grant Henning (DeWitt, Iowa/Central-Clinton) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove). The Rams pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third off a double, sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice.
Coe plated two runs in the fourth inning, starting a string of 15-straight runs scored by the victors. In the fourth, Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) doubled to right center, driving in Henning and Brierton. In the fifth, Brierton tied the game with a single to center field that plated Craig Konrardy (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and Jack Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Coe took the lead for good as Henning doubled down the right field line, driving in Brett Slager (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine Township South) and Brierton in the process.
The Kohawks crossed the plate seven times in the sixth inning. Brierton singled to left field to plate Strellner for the first run. Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) scored on a single to center by Slager. Brierton scored as Henning singled to right field. Jacobson drove in Henning and Slager on a single to left field. Konrardy drove in the final runs of the inning on a single to left field, plating Jacobson and Ben Larison (Robins, Iowa/Linn-Mar).
Coe kept the runs coming in the seventh. Michael Redmond (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the first baseman before Brierton scored on a sacrifice fly by Henning. Cornell plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, Konrardy doubled to left field, driving in Strellner. Konrardy scored Coe's final run on a sacrifice fly by Brierton. The Rams added a run in the bottom of the eighth, leaving Coe with the 18-9 victory.
Konrardy and Brierton led the Kohawks with four hits apiece, while Jacobson had three hits. With his 210th career hit, Konrardy passed Chad Kramer '06 for third on the career hits list. Redmond, Henning and Larison each had two hits. Coe's 20 hits were the most since Coe had 20 hits on May 7, 2012 at Cornell. Konrardy moved into fourth on the career at-bats list with 576, while Redmond became the ninth player in school history with 500 at-bats. Henning drove in five runs, with Brierton and Jacobson each plating four. Konrardy drove in three runs. Brierton crossed the plate five times, while Jack Strellner scored three times on four walks. Konrardy, Slager and Henning each scored twice.
Alex Milne (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a no decision in 2.2 innings pitched, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Tyler Verona (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette Academy) picked up his first win of the year, tossing four innings. Verona gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out one. James Christ (Midlothian, Ill./Breman) gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out one in 1.1 innings pitched. Tyler Smith (Urbana, Iowa/Center Point- Urbana) tossed the final inning, allowing a hit and striking out one.
The Kohawks (16-17, 11-13 IIAC) return to action on Friday, as they travel to 20th-ranked Wartburg (28-8, 21-3 IIAC). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Waverly. A link for live stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
