BELLEVILLE, Ill. - With a 5-1 victory over Grinnell on Thursday, the Coe College women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history.
The Kohawks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play. At number three doubles, Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) beat Sydney Banach and Lily Hamilton 8-3. The victory was Lasecki's 56th career doubles win, the 10th most in school history. Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) and Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) gave Coe a 2-0 lead with an 8-4 win over Anushka Joshi and Virginia Purcell at number two singles. The victory was the 25th as a pair for Watson and Washington, the seventh most by a pair in school history. It was also Watson's 59th career doubles win, the ninth most in school history and her 98th career total win, the 10th most in school history. Grinnell picked up its only victory of the day at number one doubles, as Amelia Cogan and Judith Fan beat Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) and Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) 9-7.
At number five singles, Lasecki beat Hamilton 6-1, 6-2 to put Coe ahead 3-1. Resnick downed Purcell 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles before Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Fan at number one singles.
The Kohawks (16-10) return to action on Friday, as they face 12th-ranked Sewanee-University of the South (21-5). The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in St. Louis. A link for live stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
