PELLA, Iowa - The 11th-ranked Central Dutch were too much for Coe on Saturday, defeating Coe 24-6. It was the first loss of the season for the Kohawks and snapped a five-game road Iowa Conference winning streak.Central controlled the ball during the first quarter, holding a 10:35
to 4:25 lead in time of possession, but neither team could find a way
to score. The two teams combined for 117 yards of offense in the first
quarter.
The Dutch wasted no time scoring in the second quarter, as Nate Snead
hooked up with his brother, Jeremy, for a seven-yard touchdown pass
with 13:38 to play in the opening half. The extra point put the Dutch
up 7-0.
Coe looked to make it a four-point game after a defensive stop, but a 48-yard field goal attempt by junior
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) feel inches short. It was a career-long attempt.
Central extended its lead to 14-0 on their next possession. Jeremy
Snead scored again, this time on a 5-yard reception from Zack Bandow.
The touchdown capped a 7 play, 69-yard drive for the Dutch. Central
moved the ball late in the first half, but ended the half by missing a
36 yard attempt.
After gaining just two yards on the opening possession of the second
half, Coe punted to Central. The Dutch marched the ball 70 yards down
the field, but settled for a 20-yard field goal by Jake Viggers, as the
Kohawks stuffed Central on three-straight plays from inside the 10-yard
line.
Just two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Kohawks put their first points on the board with a 38-yard touchdown pass from
Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) to
Tyler Takes
(Ely, Iowa/Solon). After a penalty on the first point-after attempt,
the extra point was missed, leaving the Dutch with a 17-6 lead with
13:00 to play in the game.
Just :53 later, Central added to its lead. A 46-yard kick return by
Mike Furlong set up a 45-yard touchdown run by Nate Snead, extending
the Dutch lead to 24-6.
Central finished the game with 196 rushing yards and 259 yards through
the air. Coe was held to just 10 yards on the ground, while throwing
for 189 yards. Senior
Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) had a team-high 21 yards rushing. Junior
Nick Ratchford
(Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) finished with a team-high six receptions for
53 yards. Boyle ended the day 16-for-31 for 189 yards. He was sacked
four times.
On the defensive end, senior
Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a game-high 10 tackles, including eight solo. Fellow senior linebackers
Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) and
Ross Yeast (West Liberty, Iowa/West Liberty) added nine and seven tackles apiece.
Coe will return to action next Saturday as they host the University of Dubuque. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Clark Field.
