CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After waiting four-years, the seniors on the Coe football team were victorious in a homecoming game at Clark Field. The previous three year's homecoming games came down to the wire, while the Kohawks put this game out of reach early, as they cruised to a 37-7 win over Dubuque. The Spartans came in averaging 458 yards per game and leading the
league in points per game. In a game that looked to be a shootout on
paper turned into an offensive struggle for Dubuque's offense against
the Kohawk defense.
Dubuque chose to receive after Coe deferred to the second half. The
Spartans could manage just nine-yards on three plays, turning the ball
over to the Kohawks. In 3:15, Coe marched the ball 78 yards down the
field in just eight plays for the first points of the game. Sophomore
quarterback
Brad Boyle (New
Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) was 3-for-3 passing for 28 yards and rushed
twice for 20 yards on the drive. Boyle found junior
Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon) in the end zone for an 11-yard strike to cap the drive.
The Spartan offense clicked on the second possession of the game, as
they matched the Kohawks in what would end up being their only points
of the game. Quarterback Colton Hansen led the Spartans on a 14-play,
81 yard drive that ate up over five minutes of the clock. Hansen found
Steve Smith for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 4:25 remaining in the
first quarter.
Coe couldn't answer the Spartan score on offense, but did on the
defensive side of the ball after a punt. Facing second and 15 from
their own five-yard line, Demacus Fleming took a reverse to the wide
side of the field, where he was met by freshman
Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) for a safety, putting the Kohawks ahead 9-7.
Looking to capitalize on the Spartan error, Boyle remained perfect
through the air, leading an 11-play, 59-yard drive for another
touchdown. This time it was Boyle on the ground from three-yards out,
extending the Kohawk lead to nine points.
Dubuque lined up for a field goal on fourth down and goal from the
four-yard line, but a fake led to an incomplete pass by Hansen, as he
was rushed by Weymiller and
Kyle Polich (Garwin, Iowa/Green Mountain Garwin).
Coe took over with 8:22 remaining in the first half. Boyle took the
offense down the field, using nearly every second of the clock, for a
17-play, 96 yard drive. Boyle threw his second touchdown pass of the
half, as he connected with junior
Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) for a 9-yard touchdown with :50 to play in the half.
After running two plays for negative seven yards, the Spartans elected
to run the clock out, with the Kohawks leading 23-7 at the break.
In a reverse-repeat of the first drive of the game, Dubuque forced the
Kohawks into a three-and-out, while taking over at its own 21-yard
line. Hansen led another fine drive, but was unable to capitalize on
fourth down at the Coe 31-yard line, where Weymiller sacked Hansen for
a six-yard loss.
Riding the defensive momentum, the offense ate up more clock, while
still adding more points to the scoreboard. A four-yard fade pass from
Boyle to freshman
Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) put the Kohawks ahead 30-7, giving Coe its highest scoring output of the season. It was the first career touchdown reception for Kuehner.
Coe forced Dubuque to punt on the opening drive of the fourth quarter
and once again drove the ball down the field, taking every second off
the clock they possibly could. This time it was a 17-play, 87 yard
drive, which saw senior
Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) score from four yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the season.
Just one week after rushing for 10-yards against eighth-ranked Central,
the Kohawks exploded on the ground for 206 yards. Boyle finished with
85 yards on 20 carries, while Hammes netted 73 yards on 19 carries.
They both had a rushing touchdown.
Boyle was also deadly with his arm, as he completed 20-of-25 passes for
204 yards. He threw for a season-high three touchdowns, while
completing his 107th consecutive pass without an interception, dating
back to last season's game at Dubuque.
Seven different receivers caught passes from Boyle, led by senior
Robert Welborn
(Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) with six receptions for 54-yards. Takes
caught four passes for 46 yards, while Rozum caught three for 24.
Senior
Chris Voss (Ames, Iowa/Ames) caught two passes for 23 yards, while Kuehner caught three for 15.
The Kohawk defense held up to their end of the bargain, holding the
Spartans to just 207 yards of offense, including 36 on the ground.
Senior
Tate Harrison (Nevada,
Iowa/Nevada) moved closer to the school's all-time tackles record with
a team-high 10 tackles. Fellow senior linebacker
Ross Yeast (West Liberty, Iowa/West Liberty) added seven tackles, while Weymiller had seven, including a sack. Junior
Nate Clear (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) added five tackles and a sack, while sophomore
Tyler Hemry (West Union, Iowa/North Fayette) also had a sack.
Coe will have next week off before facing Wartburg Oct. 17 in Waverly. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on the Knight's homecoming.
