WATERLOO, Iowa - Coe College has half the semifinalist in the Flight A Singles and Doubles Championships after the opening day of the Iowa Conference Singles and Doubles Championships.
In Flight A Singles, second-seeded Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) advanced to the semifinals. Resnick opened the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Luther's Claire Christian. In the quarterfinals, Resnick downed teammate Haruki Omoto (Setagaya-ku, Japan/Waseda University) 6-1, 6-0. Omoto had downed Loras' Kylie Dewees 6-4, 6-2 in a pigtail match before beating Simpson's Kelli Greiner 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. On the top half of the bracket, fourth-seeded Lauren French (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian) beat Loras' Jessica Dickhut 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. French advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Luther's Lauren Welch.
Two Kohawk doubles teams will be on opposite ends of the bracket for the Flight A Doubles Semifinals. On the bottom half of the bracket, second-seeded Resnick and French earned a first round bye before beating Nebraska Wesleyan's Bridges and Vendeveer 8-0. On the top half of the bracket, Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) opened the day with an 8-3 win over Luther's Crow and Christian. In the quarterfinals, Lasecki and Fosler beat Central's Maley and Walter 9-8 (7-3).
In Flight B Doubles, Tori Montoya (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) and Omoto opened the way with an 8-2 win over Dubuque's Fenhs and Webber before beating Loras' Craff and Molidor 8-0. In the quarterfinals, the Coe pair dropped an 8-5 decision to Luther's fifth-seeded Ryski and Kruse.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. Singles will start the day, followed by doubles play.
