DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College swimming and diving teams opened the season Friday night, as the Kohawks swept Loras at the San Jose Pool.
Coe opened the night with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Coe's team of Alayna McCafferty (Iowa City, Iowa/City), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) and Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) touched in 1:56.74. Coe's time was the ninth-best in school history. On the men's side, Coe's team of Nathan Homan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson ), Collin Flynn (Mount Pleasant, Wis./Walden lii), Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) and Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) were second in 1:46.76. Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:33.04, while Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) won it for the Coe men in 10:48.53. Phil Cunningham was second for the men in 11:22.71.
Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) and Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) took second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, as Appler touched in 2:09.10 and Peter in 2:14.70. On the men's side, Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) was second in 1:49.04, while Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) was third in 1:56.51. Fitzgerald won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.24, while Thompson was third in 26.85. Flynn took first on the men's side in 23.27. Freeland won the 200-yard IM in 2:26.22, while Cheng and Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) took second and third on the men's side. Cheng touched in 2:13.41, while Backhaus finished in 2:14.31.
Erin Horton (San Diego, CA/Mt.Carmel ) was second on the one-meter diving board with a score of 136.25, while Emily Montelius (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) was third with a score of 114.95. King was second in the women's 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.86, while Eleanor Peach (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J Andrew) was third in 1:17.68. Backhaus was second on the men's side in 1:00.49, while Sterns was third in 1:03.02. Appler and Peter took second and third in the 100-yard freestyle, as Appler finished in 59.15 and Peter in 1:01.01. Faidley was second on the men's side in 52.13.
Thompson won the women's 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.71, while Rachel Rethwisch (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Doge) was second in 1:15.82. Christian Chiffy (Aiea, Hawaii/Huntingtown) won the men's race in 1:02.37, while Nathan Homan was second in 1:03.13. McCafferty was second in the women's 500-yard freestyle in 6:04.38, while Markham won it on the men's side in 5:18.95. Cheng was second for the Coe men in 5:28.26. Fitzgerald won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.07, while Freeland was third in 1:15.35. Flynn took second in the men's 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.56. Coe's team of Appler, Peter, King and McCafferty won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.59, while the Kohawk men's team of Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ), Sterns, Markham and Faidley also won in 1:36.56.
The Kohawk men won 112-88, while the women won 126-77. Coe returns to action next Friday, as the Kohawks host Simpson in the home opener. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Coe Natatorium.
