WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team was edged on penalty kicks on Saturday by Wartburg in the Iowa Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of play. Wartburg had three shots in the first overtime and a 3-1 advantage on shots in the second overtime, but neither team could push through a goal. The match advanced to penalty kicks, where both teams missed their first shot. Allison Stubbs (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) hit the first one for Coe, but Nicole Adair answered for the Knights. Both teams missed the third penalty kick before Kelsey Fauser (New Castle, Colo./Coal Ridge) hit one for Coe. The Knights answered again, as Olivia Jansen put one through. Neither team connected on the fifth round before Morgan Petsche (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) nailed one for the Kohawks. Riley Miller evened it for the Knights before Gabby Rohrer hit the final penalty kick to give Wartburg a 4-3 advantage.
Petsche had five shots for the Kohawks, including four on goal. Gabby Lancial (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) and Calee O'Hare (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) also had a shot on goal. MJ Winterer (Omaha, Neb./Central) recorded nine saves in the net. Wartburg held a 26-11 advantage in shots.
The Kohawks finish the season with an 11-7-2 record. Coe will return 10 starters next year, but will be without the services of their lone senior in Fauser. In 70 career matches, Fauser recorded 27 goals and nine assists, including five game-winning goals.
