CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A school record fell on the men's side and the Kohawk women added a top 10 time in school history, as the Coe College swimming and diving teams swept Simpson on Friday night.
Coe opened the night by sweeping the 200-yard medley relay. On the women's side, Coe's team of Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Alayna McCafferty (Iowa City, Iowa/City) and Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) won in 1:56.87, the 10th best time in school history. Coe's team of Doug Sauer, Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) won in 1:43.95 on the men's side. Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) won the women's 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:50.75. On the men's side, Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) broke his own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning in 9:59.21. Eric Ford (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington ) finished third for the men in 11:52.84.
In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) won in 2:02.53, while Appler was third in 2:07.22. Coe had the top three finishers on the men's side, as Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) won in 1:55.32. Phil Cunningham was second in 2:00.05, while Nathan Homan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson ) was third in 2:01.52. Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) won the 50-yard freestyle for the Coe women, as she touched in 26.71. Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) was second for the Coe men in 23.61, while Seymour was third in 24.05.
Bundy won the 200-yard IM in 2:20.62, while Sauer won the event for the Coe men in 2:11.66. Backhaus was second on the men's side in 2:13.40. Erin Horton (San Diego, CA/Mt.Carmel ) won the women's one-meter dive with a score of 159.90, while Mitchell LeConte was second for the men with a score of 167.35. Coe went 1-2 in the women's 100-yard butterfly, as Fitzgerald won in 1:04.61 with Bundy finishing second in 1:05.22. Faidley won the men's side in 57.85, while Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) was third in 1:01.10.
Thompson won the women's 100-yard freestyle in 57.64, while Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) was second in 1:00.67. Markham won the men's 100-yard freestyle in 51.30, while Seymour was second in 52.66. Rachel Rethwisch (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Doge) was third in the women's 100-yard backstroke in 1:15.50. On the men's side, Sauer was second in 57.40, while Christian Chiffy (Aiea, Hawaii/Huntingtown) was third in 1:02.06. King won the women's 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.17, while Peter was third in 6:01.43. Sterns won the event for the men in 5:10.24, while Cunningham was second in 5:27.81. LeConte won the men's three-meter dive with a score of 176.85. Fitzgerald touched first in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, while Freeland was third in 1:16.62.
The Kohawk women won 118-91, while the men won 127-77. Coe returns to action next Friday, as the Kohawks travel to Grinnell. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Grinnell.
