CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of comeback wins highlighted the opening day of the Iowa Conference Volleyball Tournament for the Kohawks, as Coe College advanced to the championship match.
The third-seeded Kohawks opened the day with a match against sixth-seeded Buena Vista. Coe jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 victory in the first set, as the Kohawks had a match-high 16 kills and hit .231. The Beavers won the next two sets 25-16 and 25-18, as the Kohawks were on the brink of elimination. Coe battled back to hit .294 and connect on 15 kills in the fourth set, as they won 25-19. It was all Coe in the final set, as the Kohawks hit .500 with 11 kills in a 15-10 victory.
Olivia Leisinger (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lincoln) and Marley Patrick (Moline, Ill./Moline) led the Kohawks with 13 kills apiece, a new career-high for Patrick. Lindsey Koch (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) had 11 kills, while Aryn Meisinger (Gothenburg, Neb./Gothenburg) had 10. Hanna Reese (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had 48 assists, while Meisinger added four. Ali Arns (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) had three aces, with Meisinger adding two. Miller had a match-high 22 digs, while Reese had 14 for her 18th double-double of the year. Arns and Meisinger each had 12 digs, as Meisinger notched her second double-double of the season. Jaimee Rindy (Gypsum, Colo./Eagle Valley) and Reese each had a pair of block assists.
In the tournament semifinals, Coe hit just .053 in the opening set, as the Norse won 25-17. The Kohawks won the second set 25-19 to even the match before winning the third set 27-25 with 20 kills on a .347 hitting percentage. The Kohawks took the final set 25-18, as Coe hit .323 for the win.
Koch tied a career-high with 18 kills, while Meisinger joined her in double figures with 12. Leisinger had nine kills, while Rindy and Patrick each had seven. Reese tied a career-high with 49 assists, while Miller added three. Leisinger had a pair of service aces. Miller had a team-high 23 digs, while Arns had 13. Koch had 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Leisinger had six block assists, while Reese had four. Rindy and Patrick each had a pair of block assists.
Leisinger moved into 10th in school history with 887 career kills. Miller notched her 551st dig of the year, as she moved into sixth on the single-season digs list and also became the 12th player in school history with over 1,000 career digs. Rindy moved into a tie for fifth in school history with 85 block assists this season and into 10th on the single-season total blocks list with 105.
The victory sent the Kohawks to the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship match for the third time in the last four years. The Kohawks lone title came in 2014, as the Kohawks beat Buena Vista. Coe will face top-seeded Wartburg on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
