GRINNELL, Iowa - The Coe College swimming and diving teams turned in three of the top seven times in school history Friday night, as the Kohawks lost a pair of dual meets to Grinnell.
The Kohawk women finished second in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:14.62, as Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) and Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South) turned in the seventh-best time in school history. Coe's men were also second, as Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III), Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) and Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) touched in 3:47.97. King won the women's 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:36.43, taking first by over 27 seconds. On the men's side, Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) won in 10:44.20, while Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was fourth in 10:49.00.
Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.07, while Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) was fourth in 2:13.84. Phil Cunningham was fourth for the Kohawk men in 1:59.32. Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) was second in the 50-yard freestyle, while Alayna McCafferty (Iowa City, Iowa/City) was fourth in 26.78. Coe turned in a pair of top-three finishes in the women's 400-yard IM, while they both recorded a top five time in school history. Fitzgerald won in 4:53.66 with the third-best time in school history. Bundy followed with a third-place finish in 4:58.68, the fifth-best time in school history.
Emily Montelius (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) was fourth in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 161.15. Mitchell LeConte won the men's one-meter dive with a score of 170.95, while Andrew Koehler (Bel Aire, Kan./Wichita) was third with a score of 119.20. King was second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:26.38, while Cheng was third on the men's side in 2:11.63. Peter was fourth in the women's 100-yard freestyle in 59.67, while Markham was fourth on the men's side in 52.52.
Thompson won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:18.50, while Flynn was fourth on the men's side in 2:11.49. Appler took second in the women's 500-yard freestyle in 5:43.12, while Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) won the event on the men's side in 4:56.78. LeConte won the men's three-meter dive with a score of 189.50. Fitzgerald took top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:29.26, while Dangremond was second on the men's side in 2:21.88. Coe's 400-yard freestyle team of Appler, Freeland, Peter and Bundy was second in 3:53.52. On the men's side, Faidley, Sterns, Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) and Markham were third in 3:32.81.
The Kohawk women lost 166-72, while the men dropped the dual 177-62. Coe returns to action next Friday, as the Kohawks travel to Iowa Central. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Fort Dodge.
