DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College wrestling team opened the season at the Luther Open on Saturday, as 12 Kohawks earned a spot in the top six of their weight class.
At 125 pounds in the elite division, Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) finished fifth. After a first round bye, Rosenberg won by major decision (12-4) against Minnesota State's Trevor Schultz. In the semifinals, Iowa's number-one ranked Thomas Gilman beat Rosenberg by fall in 3:24. Rosenberg lost by fall to Wartburg's fourth-ranked Arnulfo Olea in the consolation round before downing Luther's Connor Murphy 13-10 in the fifth-place match.
Fletcher Green (Washington, Iowa/Washington) won his opening round match by major decision at 133 pounds before dropping a quarterfinal match to Wisconsin-La Crosses's Ryan Weinmann. Green bounced back with a pair of falls in the next two matches before finishing in fifth. At 165 pounds, Bryce Scott (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) finished third with his only loss coming to Iowa's Joey Gunther in the semifinals. Scott earned two wins by fall, one by major decision and another by technical fall.
Jake Voss (Ryan, Iowa/West Delaware) earned a third-place finish at 174 pounds, with his lone loss coming to Minnesota State's second-ranked Adam Cooling in the quarterfinals by a 5-3 score. After the loss, Voss won his next two matches by falls in the first period. At heavyweight, Brennan Koerperich (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) finished sixth. Koerperich won his first two matches before dropping the final three.
In the silver division, Brady Wilsie (Byron, Ill./Byron) won the 125 pound bracket. Three of Wilsie's victories came by bonus points, including two by fall. At 133 pounds, Amier Khamis (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) finished second. Khamis advanced to the finals with a pair of sudden victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Johnny Clymer (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) also took second at 149 pounds. Clymer won his first three matches by fall before losing in the finals.
Nate Olsen won his first match at 157 pounds by major decision before dropping a match to Iowa's Matt Malcom. Olsen won his next four matches before finishing fifth. Josh Edel (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) was fifth at 165 pounds with a 4-2 record on the day. Taylor Mehmen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) was fourth at 184 pounds. Mehmen lost 10-9 to Simpson's Noah Robinson in the first round before winning his next four matches.
The Kohawks return to action on Thursday, as they travel to Central. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Pella.
