CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College swimming and diving teams won four titles on the first day of the Kohawk Invite at the Coe Natatorium on Saturday.
The Kohawk women won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.88, as Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union), Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) and Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South) had the third-best time in school history. Coe also had a team finish third, as Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley), Rachel Rethwisch (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Doge), Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) and Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) finished in 1:45.73. On the men's side, Coe had three teams in the top five, led by the team of Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III), Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover), Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) and Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) were second in 1:30.97. Coe's team of Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic), Nathan Homan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson ) and Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) finished fourth in 1:33.78, while the Kohawk team of Phil Cunningham, Doug Sauer, Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) and Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) were fifth in 1:36.61.
Three Kohawks finished in the top five in the women's 200-yard IM, led by Fitzgerald's second place finish in 2:15.39. Bundy was third in 2:18.10, the seventh-best time in school history, while Freeland was fifth in 2:24.01. On the men's side, Sauer was third in 2:07.08, while Backhaus was fifth in 2:08.86. King finished second in the women's 500-yard freestyle in 5:27.84. On the men's side, Coe had the top five finishers, led by Faidley's 4:55.82 finish. Sterns was second in 4:57.12, the fifth-best time in school history. Markham was third in 5:04.47, while Cunningham was fourth in 5:19.42. Cheng was fifth in 5:23.18.
Bundy was second in the women's 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.37, while Thompson was fifth in 1:04.05. On the men's side, Flynn won in 54.70, while Sauer was fourth in 57.27. Fitzgerald won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.73, while Freeland was third in 2:37.78, the sixth-best time in school history. Dangremond was second for the Kohawk men in 2:22.51. Nathan Dvorak (Clutier, Iowa/Union) was fourth for the men in 2:33.87, while Eric Ford (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington ) was fifth in 2:44.60.
Thompson was second in the women's 100-yard freestyle in 56.27. On the men's side, Flynn was second in 49.98, while Markham was fourth in 50.28. King was second in the women's 200-yard butterfly in 2:23.48. Cheng was second for the Kohawk men in 2:12.29. Backhaus was fourth in 2:19.27, while Faidley was fifth in 2:37.51. Coe had four in the top five in the women's 100-yard IM, led by Fitzgerald's second place finish in 1:02.48. Bundy was third in 1:04.23, while Freeland was fourth in 1:06.60. Thompson was fifth in 1:09.43. On the men's side, Sauer was second in 57.66. Coe's team of Rethwisch, Appler, Freeland and Peter was third in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:36.62. Coe had two teams in the top five on the men's side, led by the team of Flynn, Dangremond, Cheng and Markham in second in 3:45.73. Sauer, Dvorak, Backhaus and Seymour finished fifth in 3:57.00.
The Kohawk women are in second with 519.5 points after the first day, while Morningside is in first with 544 points. On the men's side, Coe is in the lead with 792.5 points. The final day begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Coe Natatorium. A link to live results is available at CoeAthletics.com.
