CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the second-straight year, the Coe College swimming and diving teams have swept the Kohawk Invite. Coe won eight titles on Sunday, bringing their total to 12 for the weekend.
Andrew Koehler (Bel Aire, Kan./Wichita) won the men's one-meter dive with a score of 153.65. On the women's side, Erin Horton (San Diego, Calif./Mt.Carmel ) was first with a score of 295.1, while Emily Montelius (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) was second with a score of 282.9. The Kohawk women had two teams finish in the top four in the 200-yard medley relay. Coe's team of Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) and Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) finished second in 1:53.86 for the fourth-best time in school history. Rachel Rethwisch (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Doge), Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union), Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) and Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) were fourth in 2:03.45. Coe also had a pair of top-four finishes on the men's side. Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III), Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) and Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) were second in 1:42.68. Doug Sauer, Nathan Dvorak (Clutier, Iowa/Union), Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) were fourth in 1:46.62.
Fitzgerald won the 400-yard IM in 4:52.63, the third-best time in school history. Freeland was fourth in 5:08.40. On the men's side, Sauer won in 4:35.10, the sixth-best time in school history, while Backhaus was second in 4:36.44, the eighth-best time in school history. Dvorak was third in 5:13.18. King and Appler finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, with King touching in 2:02.43 and Appler in 2:03.18. Flynn and Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) went 2-3 on the men's side, as Flynn finished in 1:51.89 and Sterns in 1:52.07.
Bundy was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.90, while King was fourth in 1:06.17. On the men's side, Cheng was fourth in 56.60. Fitzgerald won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.50, while Freeland was third in 1:13.00, the eighth-best time in school history. On the men's side, Dangremond was second in 1:04.85, while Sauer was third in 1:06.63. Dvorak finished fifth in 1:11.42. Bundy was second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.71, while Thompson was fourth in 2:20.26. Flynn won on the men's side in 2:01.96. Sauer finished fourth in 2:10.33, while Christian Chiffy (Aiea, Hawaii/Huntingtown) was fifth in 2:12.78.
Fitzgerald was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.15, while Freeland and Bundy were fourth and fifth in 26.16 and 26.21 respectively. Markham was fifth on the men's side in 23.20. Coe took home the top five spots in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle, as Sterns won in 17:26.29 with the sixth-best time in school history. Markham was second in 18:05.84, while Cheng was third in 18:53.56. Eric Ford (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington ) was fourth in 19:08.87, while Phil Cunningham was fifth in 19:13.72.
The Kohawk women had first and third place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Coe's team of Fitzgerald, Bundy, Freeland and Thompson won in 3:47.88, the eighth-best time in school history. King, Appler, Rethwisch and Peter were third in 3:55.34. On the men's side, Coe had three teams in the top five, led by the team of Seymour, Markham, Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) and Flynn in second in 3:23.28. Cunningham, Nathan Homan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson ), Sterns and Dangremond finished fourth in 3:39.95, while Cheng, Sauer, Chiffy and Backhaus finished fifth in 3:35.15.
Coe won the team title on both sides, as the men finished with 1,513.5 points and the women had 1,040.5 points. The Kohawks return to action on Jan. 4, as they travel to the Copa Coqui in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
