MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Three Coe College football players were named to the D3football.com All-West Region Teams. Coe had two first team selections and a third team pick.
Senior defensive back Dylan Stepleton (Tipton, Iowa/Wilton) and senior running back Trevor Heitland (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) were first team selections. Sophomore offensive tackle Dalton Kuehl (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) was named to the third team. It is the first time being picked to the all-region team for any of the three. All three players were previously named to the All-Iowa Conference First Team.
Stepleton had one of the best years in school history in the secondary, ranking second in NCAA Division III with nine interceptions. He also ranked second in all four NCAA divisions in interceptions. He finishes his career ranked second in school history in interceptions returned for a touchdown (two) and sixth with 14 career picks. His two pick sixes this year are tied for the second-most in school history, as are his nine interceptions. He finished the season with a career-high 70 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss and 15 pass deflections. Stepleton had 182 tackles in his career, including 122 solo stops. He finished his career with 10 tackles for a loss and 32 pass deflections.
Heitland added his named to the list of some of the best running backs in school history in his senior campaign. Heitland led NCAA Division III in rushing yards (1,913) and carries (317). He ranked third in all NCAA divisions in rushing yards and fourth in carries. His 159.4 rushing yards per game were the second-most in NCAA Division III and the fourth most in all NCAA divisions. He led all NCAA divisions with 223.92 all-purpose yards per game. His 19 touchdowns were the 10th most in NCAA Division III, while he ranked 11th with 114 total points. He set a school record in rushing attempts in a season and all-purpose yards, while ranking second in school history in rushing yards. He finishes his career third in pass receptions (149), fifth in receiving yards (1,822), fifth in all-purpose yards (4,397) and 10th in rushing yards (2,084).
Kuehl anchored the offensive line that paved the way for one of the best offenses in America this season. Kuehl started every game at left tackle this season. Coe ranked sixth in the nation in fewest penalties per game (3.92), while ranking 27th in total offense with 473.6 yards per game. The Kohawks ranked 16th in the nation with 253.7 rushing yards per game, while ranking 17th with 276 first downs. The Kohawks scored on 86.8 percent of their trips to the red zone, the 23rd best total in the country. Coe gave up just 1.17 sacks per game, ranking 34th in the nation. The Kohawks' averaged 37.6 points per game, the 34th best total in America.
With three selections this year, Coe now has 28 D3football.com All-West Region selections, which is the second most in the Iowa Conference. Coe's 11 first team selections is the most in the league. Coe and Central are the only two schools in the league with six or more first team selections. By being named to the all-region team, all three are eligible for the D3football.com All-American teams. The All-American teams will be announced during the pregame show of the National Championship game on Friday night.
